Default 94 mercury outboard

Canon marine said it only had 25 psi on #1 cylinder they want 4500 to rebuild it. I have access to tools a machinest with lathes and mills, I have some experience rebuilding internal combustion engines.
My question is about part availability and whether anyone has done this before and has any advice also a source for a manual? Any info would be cool not sure what to do with it boat is a sound 94 sea ray open bow. New motor would be ten grand or better.

How big a motor? Seems a little high but totally depends on what motor it is. How much if you just find a new powerhead. Lathe aint gunna help, mill, ehh boring machines aren't mills. I've worked in both machine shops (lathes and mills kind) and engine machine shop. Two different things entirely. I would imagine for $4500 that's a new power head. But then again I don't know a ton of what boat mechanics charge. Is that a bore and new piston, I would really think that price would have to be for a re man powerhead. Keep us posted, Id like to know.

135 horse outboard and not sure what 4500 includes. But seems high eithber way would limke to go through whole upper end new rings bearings etc. Motor was still running but knocking so can't imagine major disaster. Shop said something about a new power head but without experience on on outboards not sure seems a guy could rebuild it but not sure what's involved

You could buy a "donor boat" for the motor for less than $4500.

True. Although this is not the best time to find a great deal. If you can hang on until fall, no problem.

Seloc manual available online or locally through Marine supply stores.

Parts are available online from a few suppliers or through Merc's N More up on 62nd west of I25, near the DOW. They are great motors but parts for that series can be surprisingly expensive and hard to find (compared to say, a mid-50's Evinrude).

You can find the repair manuals on Ebay or Amazon. Canon is always high, but they are DAMN good. You are taking on a big animal, and if you have not worked on outboards (rather than vehicle motors) you may wanna rethink.

good luck and document the process... could be a great thread on here..

Best advice if you proceed... YOUTUBE!

having gone through this about6 years ago. they did a great job on my evenrude 115. the labor is a big part of the rebuild but they go completely through the power head. they also got the job done quick including reboreing to 30 over, all cylinders had broken rings from a rebuild done by rocky mountain boat works in pueblo west. also their warrenty is much better. i learned that you get what you pay for. a friend of mine had his merc done by someone else and they had to work on it 3 times to get it running somewhat right, to me his sounds like the pistons are trying to change holes

Might try Al West boat service here in CS. I've been taking my boat to them since I bought it in '97 and they've always done great work at reasonable prices. A second opinion can't hurt.
