Default Dramatic increase in Gas Mileage W/ Canoe on top of Jeep

An interesting thing happened yesterday on a trip from Wheat Ridge to Granby. I drive a '95 Jeep Cherokee that usually gets between 18-20 Miles Per Gallon (I check the MPG every time I fill up). Typically on trips from Wheat Ridge to Granby, the Jeep will get slightly better mileage: 21-22 MPG.

My trip yesterday with a 15'4" Canoe strapped to the top of the Jeep (the first time I had taken the Canoe up to the Big G) was 175 miles round trip; when I filled the tank with petrol, I discovered that I achieved 27 MPG.

Has anyone else ever experienced a dramatic increase in MPG like this?

additional "lift"... a benefit of aerodynamics... all the race cars guys use it

... only they use the opposite, downward, to improve traction.

Looks like you've found a good place to store your canoe!

so you should ride around with yer canoe upside down when you want mileage and flip 'er over for traction in bad weather

On my truck my mileage varies quite a bit. I think whats going on here, depending of the way your vehicle is sitting when you gas up, it can take more or less before the pump clicks off. Sometimes I get 17 MPG and sometimes its only 12. I don't think the canoe on top has anything to do with it.

The one thing I have noticed is my mileage really drops when I'm going 70+, especially when I'm pulling the boat.

Just an aside, one thing that can really affect your mileage is not changing the fuel filter out every 30,000 miles or so.

traveling I-70 west of Denver i get great milage following slow traffic, normally 24mpg, I get 30mpg just from traffic slow downs. Put in two or three more trips and note how fast you're going each way....and not how much of an angle your jeep sits at when filling it up with the canoe on top.

i'm stickin' with my theory...
based on all things being equal given his many trips prior and his regularly checking his mileage.
the canoe on top will definitely catch air and create lift... reducing friction/drag of rubber to road and improving mileage... my $0.02

... also, ask yourself this question...
will a lighter vehicle get better mileage than an identical vehicle carrying more weight?
