Default Zebra Killer

I read another article that stated they are treating a lake somewhere with a bacteria that kills the mussels. Eventually they will find an answer to the little bastards.

When they do they will probably find some other reason to keep the inspections going. I don't see them giving up all of that money.

Meiyin Wu, of Montclair State University, works on the “BallastSolution” device, which destroys micro-organisms with blasts of ultrasound. The United States recently toughened its rules regarding the dumping of ballast water by international cargo ships —a conduit for invasive species wreaking havoc in the Great Lakes and elsewhere, and a source of bacteria and other nasties. But rather than treating ballast with chemicals (after filtering out larger fish), researchers affiliated with Montclair State University and the University of Vermont propose blasting it with ultrasound.

Their “BallastSolution” system has been shown to kill virtually all E. coli and other bacteria as well as creatures that elude filters, including water fleas, plankton and mussels. (Zebra mussels have proved to be an especially aggressive invasive species.) Ultrasound kills by causing gas bubbles within the organisms to violently vibrate, rupturing key structures. The blasters could be mounted on cargo ships or, less expensively, kept onshore, connected to tanks into which ships would pump ballast.

The project represents a collaboration between the biologist Meiyin Wu, of Montclair State, and Junru Wu, of Vermont’s flagship university.

Down the road, the researchers say, you might find your public pool using ultrasound instead of chlorine. (No more stinging eyes!) There would be no risk to humans even if someone happened to stray into the pool during treatment, they say.

Great Lakes Echo has a piece that looks at the research from a regional perspective.

Uh, it's an EXPENSE for them, not a source of revenue

Bigger budgets! More money to spend, more people to employ. So not necessarily making money, but getting more money pumped into their operations.

I think it's all worth it.... Just like the war on drugs we're winning!!!

Honestly most of the dudes I've seen doing inspections could give two shits. They're pissed that you boat is in the way of their smartphone in the shack time.
