Default Personal Pontoon Questions

Ok, I've read enough of all your posts about hitting these smaller lakes that I can't get on with my boat, so I finally went and got a personal pontoon 9' Trout Unlimited.

Looks like these things keep you pretty much out of the water, but do you guys still wear waders and fins when you use them?

hope I didn't bite off more than I can chew here.

I do. The fins help me move without using the oars. In fact I almost never use the oars on mine. The waders just keep my feet and legs dry.

Hope this helps!

I've seen a couple of guys without waders or fins- just row out and start casting. My feet would slip off the foot rests and I'd get wet for sure if I tried it. I'm like the guy with a belt and suspenders- I have fins, oars and an electric- just in case.

Thanks guys... in retrospect the waders definately made sense for keeping dry, really wasn't sure about the fins tho. appreciate it!

I have the trout unlimited pontoon boat as well. It is a nice little ponton. Mine is rigged with a 40 lb. trolling motor, GPA, fish finder and nine pole holders.

When I am using my pontoon boat, I use my oars only whenn the wind is too strong. Most of the time I just use my fins like rudders. It works well when you want hands free steering.

The waders will keep you dry and warm. Just wait until you take your Pontoon boat out next February or March. Your feet will feel like they are frozen. You will be glad you had waders.

I wear shorts all the time when I am on my toon in the summer. , Spinney, Delaneys, John, it does not matter. In fact I wet wade rivers in the summer as well. A pair of socks, wading boots and gravel guards an I am good to go.

However I do wear waders when tooning warm water fisheries. Got a case of swimmers itch at Ward Rd. Pond a few years back and it was miserable.

what kind of fins do you guys recommend? I've never used one of these but after hearing and seeing all the fish you guys seem to catch in these smaller ponds and lakes, I figured it was worth a try.

OH, and how much do I have to worry about dumping this pontoon the first time I use it?? lol

I don't think you have to worry about flipping your pontoon boat. The TU pontoon is pretty stable. My first time out, I was a little hesistant on the stabililty, so I tried pretty hard to flip the pontoon in the shallows but had no luck. I have even been at Aurura with 3 ft. waves and had no problems (other than a trolling motor does not do squat with the waves).* I would recommend that if you put on a trolling motor and battery that you slide the seat forward to compensate for the extra weight in the back.

I like the scuba type of fins better that the one you strap to wading boots. They give you more propulsion.
I replaced the tubing fin back straps with scuba straps
and they work great. Keep a spare strap in your tube because if you have ever tried to kick with one fin it's like a dog chasing it's tail. I put on neoprene booties with rubber soles over my stocking foot waders and then the fins.
Works for me.

I just use my hip waders. The fins are a necessity so that you can continue to fish when the wind is blowing. When the water warms up I sometimes go without my waders and just us some kick boots with my fins. I got some pretty funky tan lines on my legs last year when I went without my waders.
