So I have been watching some interesting videos lately and I came across one that REALLY grabbed my attention. It's a video made, produced, and released by a "Department of Wildlife" in Washington state.
The first 7 minutes or so is basically teaching people how to catch yellow perch, different methods, etc. Following that, however (at about 7:30 in) the fisheries biologist (basically their "Ewert") stops fishing and addresses the camera.
In essence, he explains that in recent lake surveys, they discovered that yellow perch were abundant in the state's lakes and that their fishery management recommendation is to harvest more perch in order to free up resources for other species.
After this little talk, he takes a big stringer of healthy perch and shows how to filet them, prepare them, etc...
Now guys, this just seems like a bolt of lightning to me... Why the hell can't our guys do something like this for our fisheries? It's a simple video, probably cost ZERO dollars to make, and it is super effective in communicating a point.
Why net and slay thousands of Blue Mesa lakers when you can have the anglers harvest them for you?
Anyway, I don't want to get political here, but please watch this video and enjoy. And like I said... the first 7 minutes or so is comprised of rigs and techniques for catching perch... the remainder of the video is super interesting, if you ask me.
The DPW does put out educational material and videos for hunting, but I've never looked at the fishing side for the same stuff, maybe they do...
They (CDOW) have a few. The whole collection is on their page on Vimeo.
Some are very enjoyable to watch IMO.
