I've had more trouble with the Merc on my Lund than I think I should. I have a buddy that repowered his houseboat with twin Honda's that didn't make it to 1000 hours.

Not sure what I would buy if I were looking today. I know Captain Nemo likes his Suzuki's, but their service network leaves a lot to be desired. Same with Yamaha.

Guess I just need to win that Power Ball. Then I can just repower when I have trouble.......

Pretty boat by the way. I'd love to have a Ranger.

Hope your buddy finds a new home for it soon.

Yah it'd be fun to have that boat in my garage for when I feel like hauling ass and playing bass boy!

The problem right now in the market is that big motors 250hp and above are almost impossible to get. Engine mfg's are allocating their engines for new builds, and re-powers are left in the dark. Was told in the last week:

1. Yamaha- no 250's available until October, but 300's are available
2. Mercury- anything over 175HP in the new 4 stroke is not available until the first of the year.
3. Suzuki- plenty of motors available in all HP.

We re-powered a few boats last season with the Merc 8 cylinder 300 Seapro, and 300 Suzuki. I was really nervous on using the new Merc's because it was the first year of this model, but they were solid. Suzuki was also decent, really liked their power band, once we figured how to prop them correctly for our application. However we did have 3 drive shafts snap into multiple pieces inside the midsection on the Suzuki's. Not a good sign in my book.

We are re-powering 5 boats and rigging a new SAFE Boat this season, and going back to Yamaha for all of them.

We have dozens of 250's in service with 1500-4000 hours on them. We get about 1000 hours before the compressors go. We have found that the air hose coming out of the compressor gets a carbon buildup in it, blocking the line, and then the compressor just beats itself to death. There are symptoms prior to failure, and if we catch them, then it is a 10 min fix and we save the compressor. Strange thing is that we only see this on Opti's from 2015-17, the older Opti compressors don't fail in this way, and just die from hours.

Good information for those with those motors. Sounds like the air hose should be replaced as a maintenance item every 500 hours.
