Have been playing with gold panning, now looking to buy a sluice box - not too large, maybe 3-4'. If you have an extra or one not being used, let me know. Cell - 303-241-5023, live near Hampden & Tower, SE Aurora, work in DTC, I-25 and Belleview -

I have a ton of sluice boxes, some manufactured, some home made, but I am on the other side of the hill.

Look into making your own. We did that to have a spare and it's actually pretty simple. Hardest part is finding a place to get the metal for cheap and having it bent.

Check your local HVAC guy, I used to work at a place that had pre-fab duct work. All you have to do is add screen and mesh, very cheap too

Hey Rich,

A few years ago I remember hearing that panning for gold would get you the equivalent of minimum hourly wage. Is that true? Maybe better now with higher gold prices? Just curious.

Thanks for the responses. Thought about making one, but wood ones are too heavy and water becomes a problem; looked at the HVAC route, but by the time you buy metal, have it bent, buy the metal for riffles, moss, ribbing, etc, you're into it for pretty good $ anyway (I don't have a stash of spare metal stuff laying around). I saw one at a yard sale a year or so ago for $30, needed new moss, didn't buy it at the time as I hadn't started this hobby yet.

I don't know if you can make wages or not based on the current price of gold, I just enjoy panning the same as I enjoy fishing - out on the water, relaxing, negative ions and all that sort of stuff -

Call the HVAC supply house and ask them if they have pre-fab duct, it is CHEAP. We sell a pre-fab piece that is 3" tall by 14" wide by 2 feet long for $14.50. This makes a great back packing size unit. It also comes in 5' and 10' lengths, for screen I scored the screen off of a damaged A/C condensing unit, and for moss we sell something called HOG's Hair media. I can build a decent unit for $50 easy, all galvanized metal. I do not know if Johnstone Supply sells this stuff over there, but maybe look for a supplier called Hercules.

walleye seeker and i came up with a lightweight and portable mini-sluice.
took a piece of 4" corragated plastic drain pipe (can use bigger pipe but the screen fit the 4" perfectly) and cut a section out down one side, spread it open wide enough to accept a section of gutter screen and placed some miners moss in the bottom... he used it already and was very pleased with the results

That is a good one, Keene sells a leg kit and a conversion kit to turn it into a high-banker.
