Will be in South Dakota when they have the free fishing weekend and want to take advantage of the free fishing. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to and or where to fish on that river for walleye? Will be staying at a friends man cave as he call it in Spring Valley.
The free South Dakota fishing weekend is May 18, 19 & 20th.
I've fished there before, you should launch in Niabrara above the inlet and fish the river. Walleyes should be full on in mid may. Lewis & Clark is really tough boating, especially up at the top end, tons of motor busting boulders. Cranks would work well in the river, and aside from a great walleye bite there's some really big northern pike in there.
I was off on the name a little it is spring creek on lake oahe not spring valley! I need to listen to my brother inlaw a little better next time. Have fished the Gettysburg area and did well on purple hot an tots and other purple combo lures.
spring creek has some nice flats across from the spring creek marina. if you cross the main lake there the west side has good fishing all the way to the dam aprox 8 miles. the folks in the tackle store at the marina are great with info.
Go down river from there and you can get to Peoria flats, up river is Sully flats, go even further up river and between Peoria flats and Pike Haven there are some good cuts with boulders and stuff. Run ever further up river and get into Cheyenne Creek to look for warmer water.
Early in the year like this might be good to head up to Mobridge or Akaska as well to get in the major tributaries like the Moreau.
I like to run bbouncers and live bait or pull cranks. The water is super high so there are lots of trees in the water too.
