Default Wicked Tuna...

...for those of you with Netflix, this show was recently added.

Pretty good show, very much along the lines of Deadliest Catch, but it is filmed in Massachusetts and they fish for the tuna with rod and reel.

Enjoy.

I wish humans would let the bluefin be for thirty years or so, let them rebound.

For what it is worth, I would love to catch one, eat one, etc. I just honestly don't consider myself (or anyone else, for that matter) worthy of the honor.

From an evolutionary perspective, bluefin tuna are the ne plus ultra. They are the warm-blooded primal distillation of raw grace and power, the absolute embodiment of the ideal of form following function. They are, in my view, perfect beings, scarcely removed from gods.

I was watching it cause it was fishing and I have a warm spot in my heart for the accent and attitude having grown up near there and spent a lot of my youth sailing out of Gloucester. But Tuna fishing needs to stop, at least until stocks really rebound. They are down about %90 percent. Mostly going to Japan.... They can't live on shark fin soup alone you know..... A good show on Netflix about fish is "Mission Blue" check it out

"Jiro Dreams of Sushi" offers a moving first person account as well. If THAT fucker sees the light, there may be hope yet.

The forage fish stocks also need to be protected. When the East Coast of the US is seeing many foreign and domestic fishing boats coming in to net up the menhaden for use in fish oil pills, thus depleting the forage base for many larger predator fish, something needs to be done. The entire food chain needs better protection, regulation and management.

Protecting bluefin stocks won't happen. You think when those guys are getting $10k for a fish they're going to give a rat's ass about the population? You think putting those NE bozos on TV is going to do anything but lead to more pressure on the species? You think you can stop the Japanese from exploiting the oceans (fwiw, bluefin are just the tip of the iceberg as far as Japanese ocean rape goes ... whales and sharks are getting killed off by the droves too)? You can't. Not when there is that much money involved, or cultural heritage that promotes an entitled attitude. It's a crying shame.
