I read somewhere that the big ring helps funnel the line into the micro guide and helps keep it from wrapping on the guide, but don't remember where.
I am looking forward to seeing your results. There is also some sweet footage of line shooting through the guides that I saw.

Interesting when you think of the friction involved and line speed and change in wave length of the moving line.
