This happened when I was about 16 years old.....so prolly like 2001ish. Took my dads boat out and crazy ass storm rolled through. If I remember right several boats were sunk and people were stranded on islands around the lake. My boat is actually just to the right of the photo in the paper. It was basically stranded on shore the next day LOL.....that day the temp dropped from about 90 to 45 in a matter of 30 minutes. Wind was crazy. We helped a couple whose bass boat was sinking....helped drag their boat kinda to shore and then holed them up in the Prarie Princess tour boat....wrapped tablecloths around them and everything.....both were probably pretty close to hypothermia. Ambulances were fairly close by, luckily....as lots of people were having a bad time that day
Craziest storm ive ever been on the water around. Ill look up some other pics I have though..
Gnarly! I'd rather be on shore when the temps drop and/or the wind gets over 20 mph. It always feel colder on a boat. You are surrounded by water and you can't move around much to warm up. Getting sprayed by 40, even 50 degree water ain't fun.
It was years ago and don't think I still have the picture but I was on a hot bite...... A slight westerly breeze had been pushing my nymphs into a honey hole just out of reach where 30 pound bows stacked up...... all of a sudden the wind died and the sun came out...... worst day out on the water anyone could ever have! Great post tangler!
Jefferson lake 4 years ago in mid October with Troy coburn.
The steel "no motorboats" sign at the boat ramp was flexing and bending hard... And it was just about white out conditions. Lake looked like an ocean with all the swells... I think I got the video of it somewhere. I'll find it.
It was a fun day of fishing! Caught lots of lakers that were feeding in the waves...
A few years back we were going through Hartsel to Spinney and it was -15*. Stopped and had breakfast and I think it warmed up to -5* before we launched. Fishing wasn't even that good....
Didn't even see a fish. The lake was glass, not a breath of wind. We called an audible and went and caught kokanee somewhere else if I remember correctly.
My best day ever fly fishing came on an overcast day that turned to snow in a remote but well know canyon in Colorado.
BWO's came off in a most impressive way and an RS2 drifted even piss poorly resulted in a fish for a couple of hours as it snowed. I felt like a Fish God and hiked out with a good foot of fresh snow on the ground.
All the days that i realized that it was epically bad by the time I realized how bad it was I was trying to get out before being snowed in or near hypothermic trying to get to my car and pictures were the least of my worries...
no pics but it was the end of feb. in a 24 foot pontoon boat on lake texoma the snow was blowing sideways all day and the waves were 4-5 feet, when we went into the wind the waves came over the deck and out the back of the boat and the fishing was so good that only one striper was caught of about 4 lbs this went on for 4 days and the three of us caught a total of 5 fish. it wasn't the best trip for sure
Jefferson Fail 2013 with me and Oyey. Super beast wind and cold as hell. The previous year had the same thing happen. Jeff weather is a horrid *****.
2013 with biggiesmalls, boon, etc. Dumped and was cold but wasn't too bad.
I also have the pics of that Taylor trip since I was in the boat too. I remember standing next to tang looking back at these two mopes thinking damn this weather sucks
Fishing the Dream Stream 2009 in blizzard.
Plus I have countless ice fishing blizzard and -30 degrees and below trips........but those don't count because that's just Colorado ice ...two trips in particular stand out though. One was an Antero trip I took that reached -40. Another was an 11mile tournament which featured winds up to 50-60mph. That day sucked...we just kinda hunkered down in the hut and tried to stop it from blowing away. It looked like it was snowing outside but it was only blowing snow from the lake
I certainly have fished in colder weather, but the ride from Bullfrog up to GHB when the temp is <30* is a LONG one. That trip was over New Years a few years back. I don't think we got above 35* the entire week. Powell that time of year can be spooky. No reliable communication, and no other boats to be seen once you get out of the marina. It is about the only reason I keep a kicker on my fishing boat.
And the brown was fun too. I don't usually have the best of luck with Granby. Someday I will figure that lake out. Or die trying.....
Damb, you guys are hardcore. This is the coldest I ever remember being on a boat:
The picture is deceptive. It was colder than it looks but I was also not dressed for the temperature drop when the clouds appeared later in the day. I have fished a lot of days in the snow for walleyes but I never took the boat out before April and after October. This was November 23 on a friend's boat. Maybe I'm just a fair weather boating poseur.
Great thread! All but a couple of my shitty weather fishing experiences have occurred with me being alone, and like Z said the couple I was with buddies the last thing we were worried about was taking pics. I have never been out on a boat during a snow storm though, so most you guys have me beat.
I still remember another guy that was out there while it was raining in an open 14' tiller driven boat. I saw him head right into a wall of rain but at the time did not know that a tornado was nearby. I had a full fishing cover, so this guy is the one who really had some balls!
That's gnarly. I didn't even know they had tornadoes in MN.
