Wanting to try my hand at some pike through the ice, not looking for trophies. I've never once had a pike bite a line, caught em all on 6 or 4 lb mono in open water. Everything I see on ice fishing pike has super heavy duty setups, wire leaders and What not. Do I really need to beef up for them?

30-40 will probably handle most fish. But true giants wont have much trouble getting through. I have been bitten off with 40, 50, and 60# leader. Granted, the 60# was with a tiger musky. Most of the time I still use 40# though. I think there is definitely something to what Tempo is saying. You might get less action.....even with the flouro leaders. But it's pretty damn painful to lose a giant because it bites you off
