Re: Looking for opinions on flourocarbon line

Fluorocarbon line isn't good for main line IMO. It just has too much memory. However its excellent for leader. Don is right Vanish is very brittle. Fluoro is even great for pike leader in 15 - 30 pound test. At least twice as cut and abrasion resistant than mono of the same thickness.

Re: Looking for opinions on flourocarbon line

I use 12lb P-line floro for lakers through the ice and I have never lost a fish and it sets the hook like a champ.

I switch those reels over to the bass poles in the summer months and again no complaints here. If you get a jig stuck under a rock the P-line will help you flip over boulders and it doesn't break.

I don't think Don likes Vanish.
I just bought a spool of the 4lb test P-lne hybrid and will be trying it out tomorrow at a lake to be named later. (because I haven't really decided yet)
I've always used trilene on my micro rods and never had a problem with tangles. But I thought I'd give the flourocarbon a shot.

I HATE Vanish. I tried it a couple of times both on spinning and on baitcast reels. It had a tendency to fray or delaminate, kind of like string cheese pulls apart. That was on both kinds of outfits.

Now I use P-Line Fluoroclear hybrid on my baitcast reels and love it. For the spinning reels I've gone back to straight Trilene mono or Fireline with a fluoro leader.

You couldn't pay me to fish with Vanish.

Re: Looking for opinions on flourocarbon line

almost every thing i have read about flouro lines is that they are tougher than mono, you may have been getting the abrasion because flouro is heavyer and will sink down to the rocks quicker. i have had problems while still fishing along riprap with the line getting tangled in the rocks as it will sink and settle in the crevices

i use flouro for everything as i feel the benifits out way any downside except for dryfly leader/tippet kinda hard to get a fly to float with a sinking line

Re: Looking for opinions on flourocarbon line

This spring I was spin fishing the Arkansas using 6 lb vanish. The rocks were really chewing it up, so every couple hours I had to strip 30 feet of line off and throw it away or risk breaking off a decent fish.

I won't use flourocarbon line when fishing rocky areas in the future. Otherwise it's OK.

Re: Looking for opinions on flourocarbon line

Switched to mono on the setups with flouro leaders this weekend. Got skunked. But I fished for three hours with no tangles. My wifes line never got tangled either. I'll stick to mono with flouro leaders for my spinning rigs.

I say if you are using 4 lb the fish can hardly see it anyway so just use mono-lots cheaper, limper, you'll be happier.

Re: Looking for opinions on flourocarbon line

i use 2 and 4# vanish for 90% of my fishing and 80% of that is with the 2#, i only break ouit the heavy 4#for the nasty conditions. i have noticed if i spool up the reel really full and fish it the same day i get a bit of line wanting to spring off when i cast. so i leave a little more room on the reel and like to let a freshly spooled reel sit for a few days before fishing. you also have to be more concsious of keeping the line tight as you begin reeling in if not then you get a few loose coils before the line snugs up and the have a tendancy to come off before their turn making for a bit of a mess
