Re: Just starting out tying

You are lucky to have a great tier like Terry Gibson teaching you. He knows how to tie a ton of patterns and will teach you correct techniques. Terry is a Chip of the old block", his Dad Hoot was also a great tier, a better friend and liked everyone he met. Keep up the good work and practice, practice and then more practice.

Great job! I will always remember the first fish I caught on a fly I tied!

Let me tell you a secret...
Get the book Jack Dennis wrote "Western Trout Fly Tying Manual". What a gem!

Look up the "Silver Hilton"
Tie one a size 12
Go catch anything in the Poudre!

It is a steelhead fly, but browns & rainbows just love them!

Just starting out tying

These are some of my first flies after having a 2 hour lesson with a local tyer Terry Gibson here in Fort Collins.
I initially wanted to start off tying really small things like 18 size midges but Terry helped guide me start off with things like the woolly bugger, simply dries, and beaded hares, most tied on a size 14 to 16. The small stuff will come later this winter. Thanks to his simple mantra, "start at the tail and work your way forward" I have progressed to a nice Comparadun. Thanks Terry.
