Re: ????wheres the catfish?????

Ive fished Barr quite a bit, but i gotta tell you it was Don B that filled me in on how to fish it a few years back. It can be tough, and sometimes you dont even get a hit out there, but if you are persistant and dont quit sooner or later you will get into some quality fish. My best luck has come after June or so when the water drops...fish shallow and target areas where you think rocks and other bits of cover are, ive had the best luck in those areas by far. I havnt found any particular area that has tons of cover, but sticking close to the dam is your best bet if you are shore fishing (you cant fish off the dam, but you can fish at the bottom of it when the water drops) As stated, the rangers dont have any issues with you fishing there are night as long as you arent doing anything stupid. My experience has been that the fish move through areas and you will catch a few, then it slows down a bit until they come back around. I thought i had this pattern figured out (right at sundown until about 12 am) but sometimes it doesnt work that way. Also be prepared to catch a few big carp and sometimes even a wiper or two. Last year we even caught a pike (yes a pike, the warden was there and identified it, so it wasnt a musky...it was the only one he had ever seen there) My favorite bait out there was usually liver or crawlers, but we cleaned up last year on cut shad so maybe thats the ticket...who knows. If its windy still give it a try in the shallows, change up your rig to a triangle shaped sinker so it doesnt roll around and use a crawler....ive caught some big ones there when it was so windy i had to constantly move my bait as it washed back into shore every ten minutes or so. the wind seems to churn up the food out there and the fish feed pretty heavily then it seems. dont be turned off by the shallow water, the big ones are still out there in 2 ft or less after the sun goes down. watch your rods close, ive seen a few lost there by some really big fish....i prop mine up on sticks and keep close to them just in case. using circle hooks will help you hook fish you otherwise might lose...just remember not to set the hook-----just reel your line tight and apply side pressure when you get a solid hit and the fish will hook themselves.

Re: ????wheres the catfish?????

The ranger will let you fish it if you stay fishing actively. No sleeping, dozing, or the likes. You must stay active.

Re: ????wheres the catfish?????

I have caught massive amount of cats weighing 5 to 10 ;bs out of Barr. My biggest was 23 lbs last year in July on sucker meat soaked in beef blood. Barr has potential. You just have to know what you are doing.

Re: ????wheres the catfish?????

I caught my first cat when i was 6 and have never turned back. As for Barr, Give it another two weeks and the cats will be going good. Unless, of course, we have some really windy days, then it will go sooner.

Caught a little 7 LBER at chatfield in thew spillway tonite.* First cat of the year!* Didnt like my other baits but he decided he wanted to eat a piece of cheese!* Also sterns lake is a good for cats.* Good population of channel cats from 5-15 lbs. Lots of fun. It also has big bull heads in it.* My best is 4.8lbs, State record is 5.1 lbs.* My money is on sterns to break that state record. By the way you better be sure you want to be a catfisherman cuz once you go cat, you never go back lol.
