That needs to be the "Golden Rule" everywhere; not just for Dillon. Selective harvesting of valuable resources (predators) is what keeps the fine balance required for a quality fishery.

As long as the DPW continues the feeding program they should keep growing but it's only been a few years.
Prior to that weren't they mostly stunted?
I'm guessing it will be years before we see any pigs of yesteryears but nice to see some growing.  |
Redleader my Bro, I have a friend who caught a 31 incher through the ice. This spring I seen one from the bank that had to be way over 30", I saw one dead from mold this fall that was 32.
The fish in the pic was 27.
No doubt the fingerling stocking has helped and is a great thing for the lake, but they stock those fingerlings in may through the ice. Most of them get consumed or die off real quickly. By late june, no browns spitting out fingerlings, and no fingerlings seen around the docs or inlets. So 11 months out of the year, there is no supplement for the browns. But this fall, we did get some stocked that were bigger than fingerlings, but smaller than a "catchable" stocker. As long as this keeps up, it wont be long until its more common for people to catch some nicer fish like back in the day. The browns however will never recover to what they used to be as long as there is kokanne in the reservoir. Kokanne spawn right over the top of the brown spawn, and the kokanne out compete the young browns for already small amount of zooplankton in the lake. So the browns are and will always be stunted.
But, with the fingerlings and small char, the browns over 15" have drastically increased in body condition, and more fish are making the jump over the 15 inch hurdle. Partly because of the fingerling stock, but my opinion is the bigger reason is that the browns are preying pretty hard on the juvenile Arctic Char, about 1 out of every 3 or 4 small char i see has predator marks. Now, since the Char are such a big deal to the CPW, no slot or any trophy protection for browns will ever be given to Lake. You know, its another good fish/bad fish scenario. And with so many kokanne(good fish) and so many char(good fish) and very few predetors(bad fish). Dillon has become a lake with an extreme amount of fish. Problem is, 98% of the fish are either a sucker, or a koke or char under 10" that has to much competition for food to grow.. This is not fisherman friendly, and it is very obvious Dillon needs more predators to balance out the fishery.

How do you know this?
Have they netted any?

pounds or inches? either way thats very impressive! I remember growing up hearing stories how they would chase monster browns with whole chickens. I always thought they were pulling my leg... I know those really big browns are hard to catch even where they are plentiful...

There are Browns in there well over 30. A guy could fish it religiously for years and never get one tho.
