Nancy, they just came out with the colored beads in the last few weeks., havent used them yet. I did get a mix of Gold, Silver, Copper, and Black, all of which had problems with the coatings.
Havent yet bought any of the new ones with the colors, i'd like to see some before i spend the $ to be certain the coatings are ok.
didnt think of paint pens, great idea!

Hey Jim, what colors were losing their coatings? That sounds pretty bad!

I picked up a Sharpie paint pen (oil based) over at Meininger's while I was there. They used to carry the Deco Color pens but apparently they have been discontinued. It's sort of like a fine tip pen with paint instead of ink. It coats pretty well, but have no idea as for durability.

I've used up my last batch of 100, really like them for the most part. Two BIG issues though....... One, the coating on the beads comes off very easily, especially if your flies are bumping bottom, had to cull about a dozen right away because the coating would come off on my fingers. Number two, you really need to use a paint ( testors model paint, etc) on the eyes, marker just rubs right off. I've used them on a couple Czech patterns, and i have noticed a bit of a difference in the catch numbers.
In all, i like them. Just need to refine their coatings for me to buy a lot more.

Neat idea with the different colored beads. My understanding was that a bead head immitates a gas bubble that forms around an emerging bugs head like an old fashion astronauts helmet. So I don't know how much I would paint on eyes on lots of flies....having said that there will probably be a huge flood of reports on bead heads with eyes catching a ton of fish.

The paint for the eyes is applied with a DecoColor Paint pen... I'd used these in the past for a different application, and it's pretty durable paint. The flymen guys have them for sale on their site.

Hey, I keep seeing these guys in Fly Tyer. Neat idea - tungsten beads with eye 'bumps' on 'em.
Nice touch with a 'paint pen' to make the eyes nice and shiny.

Find them at

Apparently they now do colors like baetis green and mayfly brown and caddis green. Kinda neat.

Apparently they list Anglers Covey in the Springs as carrying them, too.
