Hello to everyone,

I recently had a chance to do some fishing and caught some Trouts. I wanted to know what is your opinion on catch & release. I posted up a trip report on another forum and got some BS from someone saying the fish I had caught were to small. I was under the impression that anything over 10" is a go. Is this the case.

here is the report I had posted earlier

If it's big enough that you want to spend the time cleaning it to eat what you can get, then have at it as long as it's within the legal limits.  Ignore some of the aholes on here.  Some people eat 4" perch, 8" brookies, or 20" trout, it really doesn't matter as long as you had fun catching them and you eat them :)

It's responsible to keep only what you'll eat and some people would say let the bigger ones go and eat the small ones too, also remember that if you pull out a bunch of fish from a place, next time it might not be as good of fishing if everyone does that. Selective harvest, keeping some small ones, keeping only a few instead of a limit, and all that can go a long ways to making future trips that much more enjoyable. Balance is a good thing :)

In my PERSONAL oppinion, the stocker trout are there for that very reason. They are non-native fish supplied by the government for sport fishing opportunity and for people to eat. That is why they stock several times a year, to ensure the availability of this man made rescource. While I personally choose to release 99% of the fish I catch, I see nothing wrong with keeping a limit either. Ethicly I think that it is up to each one of us to determine for ourselves what number and how often we decide to keep fish. If we all keep a limit every time we go, then the fishing gets harder and harder and it becomes harder to perpetuate the sport, and eventually there will be no more fish in our waters. Also the type and season of the fish is a big factor on what to never keep, pulling bass of their spawning beds in the spring, or brown trout during the fall spawn etc. is considered by most to be of the most severe ethics violation.

In general, keep only what you plan to consume that night, (except post spawn salmon), return lunkers with desireable genetics, and don't keep fish caught during their spawn and you should be pretty much okay without offending anyone on here, then again, there is always that one guy....

just my $.02

Accept this fish:

Looks like a pile of dirt to me LOL

Naw, J/K man ..

You will get slammed for eating to small of fish you will get slammed for eating too big of fish. use your judgment as to what fish to release and what fish to keep and then stand by your decision. No matter your poin of view there will be others who disagree.

Little bugger slipped off my hand when taking off the hook. So yeah he is covered in dirt.

Ive never got much hassle in this forum. People are very respectful. The BS was in another forum and that made me really wonder if what I had done was wrong. Dont worry none of the fish went to waste. As soon as I got home we cleaned them up and ate them all. ;D
