Re: how long would you keep tackle?

all of the tackle i have is not antique - its pretty modern or at least was new withing the past 8-10 years. so this is not junk. and would be totally servicable if i were to get back into spin/cast fishing.
i never spent big $$$ on tackel until i got into fly fishing and even that caused heartburn since i was not used to it. well, i spent a lot of $$ just not buying high end rods/reels. never saw the point.

the rods that i have are all berkley. i used to really like those. decent price and performed very well for me. the rods i own are call Berkley Canadian Specialist Series rods. i must have a dozen in all sizes from 5ft UL up to 7 1/2ft MH in spinning and a few in casting. they are nice rods and IM7 graphite with nice cork handles. they were all new from 2000 - 2003. they were used a lot back then, but have not been used since 2003. they have been properly stored and maintained. they were approx $75 each new.

the reels i used to use were shimano tx series. not the most expensive or featured, but the always did well for me. i tx 500, 1000, 2000, 3000 models and some extra sppols and they are paired nicely for each of the rods above. these reels i think were approx $30 new.

i have lots of lures/crankbaits, mainly for walleye and bass. a ton of platics - mainly curl tail grubs, a huge amount of jig heads, lots of harnesses and bottom rigs, etc. i even have a few plano tackle boxes and large rod tubes.

i used to be a hard core walleye fisherman on lake erie and in canada and used to fish a lot of tournaments. which is what amounts to me having a lot of walleye tackle.

maybe over the next few weekends between painting the house, thanksgiving, watching football and being swamped at work, i can take some photos and make a more detailed list and post up and see what the interest level is.

some of it i want to see. some i would love to donate to a cause as mentioned. and i would like to hang on to at least 2 spinning rods/reels since ya never know when that might come in handy. i love the fly rod, but at times a spinning rod would make so much more sense.

I like to give away my old gear. I think of it as planting seeds, and I have seen some seeds grow into fisherman out fishing me.

This tends to happen to a couple people a year on this forum it seems....

If I had some old gear or gear I didn't use a lot, that's what I would do. Pay it forward.

That's a great idea IMO.

AA... One idea would be to donate it(rods and reels). I collect said equip. for the Montana PikeMasters Club and they use it to give to kids that are needy and also for an organization called Camp Make A Dream, it is a camp for kids with cancer. The club goes through and repairs the equip. if needed then hands it out. Here are some links to the club and camp if you would be interested! This also goes to anybody else that would like to donate, a few great members here have already sent stuff up with me!!! Thank you guys!!!

Thom,

If you go to Big Mac in Nebraska...the ranger station there has loaner rods reels and tackle for kids and people to use that show up and borrow if they dont have fishing tackle...gives people a chance to fish that dont have gear and lots of people get use of it...the last time I was through there I dropped off a bunch...they were most appreciative...just an idea...

Re: how long would you keep tackle?

Well alot of older stuff is almost better, alot more care was taken in the manufacturing. For example way back in the day Cabela's used to have their rods made by Loomis, so those are worth a bit of money and are very good performers as well. If you paid alot of money for them a while ago, they might be worth even more now. Never know....

If you KNOW you are not going to use it, get rid of it. However, if it caught fish for you 6 years ago, chances are it will still catch fish for you today.

Re: how long would you keep tackle?

Luckily I dont have this problem, I have a kid who is as tough on equipment as I am... so I am always replacing rods and reels. Plus he has friends and some of them never fished before, lost one reel to one kid stepping on it, there's no end.

But if it was stuff I knew I'd never use again I'd sell it, I sell stuff here and there that I havent used in a couple years or so... Last was a 6" ice auger better to let someone else have it that will use it.
