I am torn, and have had many restless, sleepless nights, thinking,..maybe, just maybe, .I am upsetting my icefishing buddies when I use my Marcum. It really bothers me, and saddens me, thinking my Vex friends are having trouble. So a lot of times, esp. in deep water, I use it to find depth, and then turn it off, because making my friends happy, is the most important thing to me.
So,..... I've been thinking, should I buy a Vex, and keep my trusted, fellow icebuds happy?
Ed Slayer has a Marcum and Crazy T has the L-5 and its never to much trouble but if Crazy T gets within 5' forget using the Vex they turn into a siren of red and green.
I have my marcum and would not trade it for any vex. on the market. My buddy has a vex and is always trying to trade me out of my marcum. Not a chance! Keep it, who cares what your buddies think!!!!!
As one of your loyal ice buds, I say keep it. Every year I look forward to the Marcum's interference with my Vex and how it renders it useless. I also really enjoy the sound of my own whining and crying. Still, one of the best things is that when you really want to use it all day, you have to move very far away from me and your other friends and it gives us a nice break from having to fish with you!! It's kind of fun yelling across the ice, "Hey Ed, how ya doing over there all by yourself ?"
If you do change your mind and get a Vex this year, I guess we could get used to fishing with you again.
Depends, a low end Marcum has more power than a low end Vex. If you want to go high end, i think either one has about the same amount of power. I have a marcum LX-5 and love it. I have owned a Vex FL-12 and thought it was underpower, while a LX-3 had way more power then the FL-12.
The only reason I would change is if you want to have a dual range trasducer.
More power means you can see your jig in deeper water. In places like gross where I fish in water up to 80 feet. I would loose my jig with an underpowered flasher

i know a guys whos looking for a marcum, let me know if you decide to sell it but me personally i have always fish blind and like to fish blind, but i do get kind of upset knowing my friends use finders and catch more then me some times.
i always wondered how much power a flasher really has to have??? and i agree that the fish can probably sense that stuff when it is way powered up, i usualy catch more when mine is off, but i get lazy and turn it back on usually...
I can see fairly teeny jigs at well OVER 100 feet at places like the Mile and Granby, and Blue Mesa.
If I get interference from hubby's FL-18, I just keep hitting the IR button until it stops. Or if we're fishing next to each other, we switch the cone to 19 degrees on his, save the battery on mine for the Aqua-Vu, and fish together on the same flasher. Bernie taught us that one. Actually works pretty well too. (This is if we're fishing in 45+ feet of water.)
But if I'm fishing Antero, sometimes it actually does help to have the switchable zoom. Can make the difference between sets and misses. Heard of nothing but grief if the old Marcum doesn't like the depth - i.e. too shallow.
I'm asking old Santa Claws for a summer transducer kit for my Vex. Need to get my own float tube fired up for dropshotting this summer.
get rid of that piece of junk , ill buy it and put it with my other lx-5 and have an extra piece of junk to let my buddys use, (just Kidding ) but i will take it off your hands
You guys are too funny. Thanks for all the responces, and after a lot of consideration and countless months and days and hours of agonized thinking, (well, maybe a couple minutes), I think I am gonna keep the Marcum.

Nahh, let me help u out. You don't want to lose your friends, it sucks fishing alone. Let me take that dam thing off your hands and I will take it to the ice and see what the problem is with it and then I will toss it into the hole when I am done fishing with it. (Probably in about 50 years)
I will definitely take care of it for you and preserve your friendship...I will even throw in a couple bucks so you can buy your friends lunch. > >
Don't sell it. Drop it down a hole, and fish blind!
Now lets go get some early ice mackinaws dude.
Robert
