Re: Hooking Humans!

It was a long boat ride back to the car, and I didn't have a mirror with me, so I just pushed it through by feel. It took a lot of force to push that huge barb through. Luckily I had a fishing partner on the boat with me, so once I got it pushed through, he cut the hook with some pliers (gotta have a good pair when your fishing for 'skis) and I backed it out.

A week later, I was loading my truck in the dark for a day of fishing... a treble was sticking out of a webbed pocket on a backpack and I buried it in my forearm... had to carry the backpack inside attached to my arm and remove it the same way.... Since that day, I debarb ALL my flies and lures. 100% barbless 100% of the time, ESPECIALLY throwing those huge hooks on the muskie gear. Never again. It's cost me alot of fish, but I'd rather lose fish than go to the ER to have a hook removed from something vital.

That muskie lure incident could have been much, much worse.

How'd you get it out?

Ouch! One good reason to pinch the barbs.

Two HUGE yanks with my Rapala pliers did not help! I went to ER. They asked me to sign in & you should have seen the girls face when I showed her why I couldn't sign in. A doctor, two RNs, & a technician worked on me. Each finger got a shot of lidocaine, which felt like I was giving birth out of each finger- worse than the hookset or attempts to remove & those were excruciating enough- think about all the nerve endings in your finger tips- didn't cry though Once the lidocaine set in, they used wire cutters to make each hook individual & no longer a treble hook. Then, they just pushed them through, point first- this step took much longer than you'd expect (quite a curve as you'll see in the pic).

A buddy of mine has a picture of another friend of ours wearing a #2 Green Butt Skunk embedded perfectly crosswise in the end of his nose. He made him pose for the pic as the price for removing it.

I've fished with some real pips!

This one was in the nerve on the back of my neck and I was such a puss I had to go to the hospital to get it out.

The other 20-30 I have just ripped out.

Including the size 12 Stimmy I stuck into the tip of my nose fat last summer. With a barb...what an idiot.
