Dai Rikki hooks are NOT tempered, they break super easy. Stick with TMC or Daiichi, you can never go wrong.

Saber hooks same deal, soft and break too easy.

Re: Saber Hooks?

Tiemco's I've been getting as of late are ranging in the $6.50 area for 25, probably time to just get the 100 packs which I checked when I was at Charlie's yesterday and they were around $21. I agree the shipping on hooks is absurd. Almost as bad as when places charge for shipping based on dollar value of the order.

I've been getting either tiemco's or Dai'riki's from Colorado Skies for what I believe are good prices. I have not bought hooks for a while so I'm not sure where prices have jumped. I wouldn't hesitate to order streamer hooks from Saber though. I just can't justify ordering one type of hook for an order and pay shipping for that single item.

Doesn't look like Saber has the best selection in styles, but could replace my more common styles.
If you're on small fish, no problem, anything larger than 12" and you stand to lose fish due to strength issues on the sabers, I bought a bunch of them, thankfully, I got an assortment and the larger stuff is fine, the smaller stuff is weak, I tossed out nearly 4 dozen flies I tied on them just due to failure(straightening out).

Re: Saber Hooks?

I'd recommend just buy some and see what you think. Can't say for sure re reliability because I have flies I've tied with these mixed in with those tied with Tiemcos. The only issues I can recall with hook brands have been with some very small Mustad dries and with a Montana Fly Co. scud hook version, both of which were involved in a few "straighening" incidents I felt were uncalled for. But I haven't sworn off those even, so, I'm perhaps a bit more forgiving than most.

Re: Saber Hooks?

Wow crazy, those Allen hooks are not very expensive either. Honestly I don't think I will ever stop using Tiemco, but for certain patterns that I go through a lot of, its hard to argue with the price....the quality though I will just have to find out for myself I suppose. Yeah I also didn't plan on buying them much smaller than about 16

They tend to run slightly bigger than Tiemcos, but they're good IMO and hard to beat on price.
Holy cow those prices are tough to beat, and I like how the numbers seem familiar Do they run true to Tiemco sizes, what's your experience with strength and durability?
