Luke the Dog Try going up to Elkhorn in Loveland to see if they can do a custom fit for him.

fishfrnzy Yes, what Koldcut &Sorelips said. You dont even need a blank. An old donor spinning rod will work. You just need to determine the ID of the fly rod at the butt end then find the section of an old rod that fits. A dial caliper would make the fastest measurements. 4-5" of overlap inside the fly rod should be enough. Then glue on whatever type of grip or skeleton grip you want. Make it so you can remove it until you get the length he likes then you can use 5 minute or whatever epoxy to make permanent. If you move the grip way up on a fly rod you'll change the action some but it will still work.

swimbait Just a thought, but center pin fishing might be a good fit for your buddy too. Worth looking into at least. I have never seen anyone around here doing it, perhaps because our rivers are so small, but it is stupid effective for trout.

You could build a sweet custom grip that could help lock the rod into his arm pit and then use what's left of his arm to steer the rod.

This could be a good first option, as you could convert a decent used rod with out spending money on a custom build until you find out if he likes fly fishing.
yup.

If there is a rod that has a hard butt end, you might be able to apply some heat to it, via a boiling pot of water, to soften the glue up and make a neat removal. Then just use another piece of rod to extend it, then build your extended grip on that piece.

Oyey A decent custom rod can be affordable.. then it could be made to his specs.. I would go that rout.

CF LURKER What about adding something to the spey rod to get the length he needs?
Make his own "custom" rod..probably throw balance off but at least it would get him a fly rod
Only thought I have, maybe some of the rod builders will chime in....

good luck to him and hope he finds something that works.

Custom fly rod with a longer rear grip?

I have a friend at work who has only one arm, he has a good portion of his other arm a little past the elbow, lost in a nasty accident. He loves to fish, he currently fishes fresh and salt water. He was asking me about a fly rod with a longer rear grip so when he had to reel he could hold the rod with his bad arm (his right arm). Where can I find something like this if it exists? I looked at the spey rods but the longest grip I could find was 7 inches. Do they make longer or does it turn into a custom job? thanks for all information ahead of time.
