There were New Zealand mudsnails discovered along one portion of the College Lake shoreline in fall 2011. The mudsnails are the same variety that were previously discovered in Boulder Ck., a stretch of the S. Platte in Elevenmile Canyon, and at least one of the Delaney Buttes Lakes. They are small and easily transported, so the CSU students worked with CPW to come up with a process for decontaminating waders before they get to the lake (so that no new species pop up) and decontaminating them before they leave, so that any NZMS that might be trying to hitchhike don't get out.

Quick update!

The tickets for the CSU Fishing Derby sold out in near-record time (< 1 h). Thank you everyone who purchased tickets; by doing so, you're supporting a great group of students.

CSU Fishing Derby is Back!

After a 1-year hiatus because of concerns with aquatic nuisance species, the Spring 2013 AFS Fishing Derby, brought to you by the Student Chapter of the American Fisheries Society at Colorado State University, is back. The Derby is held on College Lake on the CSU Foothills Research Campus, a lake that is closed to all fishing and access except for this particular event. Tickets (100 total, 2 per person limit, $30 per person) are going to go on sale at 7:00 AM on Saturday, April 13th, by the Wagar Building on the CSU main campus.

The CSU Student Chapter of the American Fisheries Society uses the proceeds from the Derby to support their research, outreach, and learning activities, including hosting kids fishing days, sending students to professional meetings, and doing small-scale fisheries projects in the surrounding area.

It's a great cause, and the fishing in the lake is particularly good for northern pike, with a good chance of running into some large bass (both largemouth and smallmouth), along with the occasional big walleye and outsized crappie. It is all catch and release, artificials only, and while you can wade, you cannot float. Prizes are awarded for the largest bass, largest pike, most fish caught, most inches caught, largest pike on a fly rod (sponsored by New Belgium Brewery), and smallest fish caught.

The big difference between this year and past years is that because of the ANS concerns, the students are going to help everyone decontaminate their waders and wading boots before and after the event - if they don't do it, then this will be the last Derby.

And in case you're wondering, yes, the fish in College Lake (northerns, largemouth, and smallmouth) do hit swimbaits!
