Re: Ice Fishing from a Wheel Chair?

This was taken on Evergreen Lake last December 24th. The person pushing the wheel chair was on ice skates

As Roadkill said, shouldn't be a problem on most lakes. I know when I've been on Georgetown, Williams Fork, Chatfield, Elevenmile, Granby (in most spots) there is some relatively smooth ice - keep an eye out for the ice boats or the ice wind surfers - there usually isn't snow around them. Pulling on a sled could be tough depending on the distance, but if you have a snowmobile, and if you can wrap him like a burrito and shield his face with a tarp or blanket, it could be a quick way to get him around.

Good luck this winter!

Re: Ice Fishing from a Wheel Chair?

Thanks everyone for the suggestions. Some good ones and we appreciate it.

My son is into fishing (especially ice fishing) big time and I don't want him to miss the opportunity to do what he loves to do.

Re: Ice Fishing from a Wheel Chair?

there are lots of lakes that will not have much snow ontop of the ice you could just wheel em out use some good ice grips/cleatson your boots and your good to go
you might even be able to make "ice tires" for the chair take some fine (like 50#) steel cable and wrap it round the tire going thru the spokes it would be like haveing cable chains on the chair tires

if you wanted to get out of the weather go to walmart and buy one of the larger dome tents that you could push the chair right in thru the door and then just cut some holes in the floor to fish thru it wont stand up to the harshest winds but it will make a big difference also could bring a small heater and other goodies

there are tons of wheelchair accessable fishing spots like O'haver lake, one or more on the ark and lots of othere check the DOW site i think they have a list

good luck and be thankfull this is not a permanent thing

Re: Ice Fishing from a Wheel Chair?

Sorry to hear about the leg, what a bummer.

Do you have access to a snowmobile? If so, just drill a hole and fish off of it. That is what I use to do back a long time ago. Somebody else will have to do all of the work (loading and unloading sleds) and it is a little harder to keep the broken wheel warm, I use to just wrap a couple of wool blankets around my whole leg. It's different but it can be done.

Ice Fishing from a Wheel Chair?

My son broke his leg and and will be in a wheel chair for a while. Crutches are in the future but not sure when. Does anyone have suggestions for getting him on the ice safely this season? Other wheel chair accesible suggestions before ice season would be appreciated too. Thanks everybody.
