Re: Sign The Petition To Protect Big Laketrout

Jay nice thread, also every one else that contributed nice work. In moving out here fron the west coast people tell me yeah mac(lake trout) fishing is good but our fish are smaller than your use too. I thaught to myself well that's weird but ok. Then after reading this thread i think i figured out a few things that might be cause this.

1. The daily Limit it looks as though it's 4 in CO. Back in CA you could only keep 2.

2. Over fishing. It looks like even though there are a bunch of lakes here that have lakers there are also abunch of people that fish for them, and keep them. Back home he kept mostly macs in the 4-6lb range they fit great on a bbq made great loxs and smoked up quite good the smaller ones well they needed to grow and the big ones well they sure make alot of babies so we should fealy keep those things around.

Check out this thread on another site about groth rate of macs
http://www.casperstartribune.net/art...0c008128b4.txt

Macs have a long live span, that means they live a long time not forever. Some grow to be pigs others don't. The fish in the linked article did not grow to be a pig but was what i would consider an older fish. I have caught 25+ lb macs in 3 different lakes i have also caught 8" long macs guess what all of those went back. A good friend of mine is a guide back in CA he spend most of his time focusing on macs, trout, and kokanee. He encourages people to release thier trophy fish just think if you bring in a 20lb mack next year she might be a 25lb mac you never know plus think of the next generation and how you taking hoime this pig will effect the fishery in years to come. Yeas i want a 50lb mack on the wall but it wont be a skin on taxidermy i'll have a replica made they look great and i know that fish is still swiming around making babies.

Bass fishermen and women make such a big deal about throwing bass back let us mac fisher people make a big deal about throwing macs back. It kills me to see posts with pics of a bunch of small mack you know that is a generation of fish we are wiping out by keeping them. Let them grow i promis when you fight a 15+lb mac because you let them go for a while you will be quite happy or hell let the 4 two pounders go and go catch 1 eight pounder.

Jay should be comended for bringing up the subject. I haven't read all 12 pages but I get the jest of the topic.

As for myself, as most of you know I've never caught a laker, small or big. After belonging to this site I myself have a new respect for the preservation of them and if I ever do cautch one I'll admire it for a moment then release it to be admired by the next fisher.
