Ok, I hit eleven mile again today -- but with the boat this time. I trolled all freaking day and the only hook up I got was when I was taking a pee  and it got off -- go figure. I then went back to Sucker cove and after losing another fish and missing several bites I landed this 19 1/2 inch beauty. I then missed a couple more bites and went home -- then wind got real bad. Also I used rainbow PB with the sparkles
I have a question for any one knowledgeable in 11-mile biology. The trout that I caught had several large scales in its stomach -- between the size of a nickel and a dime. Are these sucker scales or some other fish?

I'm not a professional biologist or anything, but I noticed the same thing last year, and the best I can figure is that the carp/suckers are moving shallow to spawn, and they roll alot, losing scales along the way, which are flashy to the trout and they eat them. Just a hypothesis though, don't think there are too many other fish in 11 mile with that caliber of scales.

sounds reasonable -- I forgot that there were carp in 11-mile. Time to break out the compound bow and do a little carp fishing

It's funny you mention the carp at 11mile. My buddy and I were there this weekend and fished Witchers Cove for Trout and pike. We didn't catch anything until we were in the shallows and saw some gigantic carp in 2 feet of water. We broke out the snapping hooks and snagged three carp weighing 6 1/2 pounds, 7 1/4 pounds and a monster weighing 10 1/4 pounds. They were very slow due to the cold water temp. Nasty looking fish, but they grow so large and they are in every lake in Colorado.

I wouldnt broadcast that stuff about snagging carp, although I commend your actions. The DOW will weld you in a cell if they catch you snagging out of season.

Snagging Carp is illegal, you should be ashamed of yourself for having to resort to snagging carp, they deserve more respect than that. If you want to catch carp just use this bait it works everytime

You need cherry soda, and Cornflakes or Wheaties.
Wet the Cornflakes or Wheaties with the cherry soda.
Then Mix and put them into little balls

Hook on a small treble hook and put a split shot 18" over the bait.

You are missing out if don't try carp fishing at least once...great fun on a fly rod!! However they are not good eating in my opnion. On the other note...weather or not you like them, it is still illegal to harvest them out of season...thanks for making all fishermen look bad!!

WOW, I didn't know that you were so sensative.  I didn't harvest (KILL) a single fish, I barely snagged them, weighted them and let them go.  I just wanted to see how big these fish really were.  I snag 3 fish in April and I'm the enemy, but come November and you can snag anything in the lake and your a hero.  Whatever.

Loco...I had it once and did not like it at all!!
Meth...How is that different than trapping a bear or something? If a deer hunter roped a deer (is that something a guy would even try???) "Just to see how bit it was" there would be huge consequences...not to mention how other hunters woudl look in public opinion.

It's a fish not a bear , deer, antelope, or goat. Thanks for all your wonderful insight. I'm more educated now. I will only snag 3 year old kokanee in November, and if I happen to snag a carp in the process I will chew my line off.

Meth, you may not have done the right thing but who cares? Just don't do it again. Don't listen to people when they personally attack you on the web, they are just being hypocritical and have probably snagged carp before themselves. Nothing against anybody just give the guy a break...

we need to have some one from this site to set the new state record for the carp or any fish
i think it would be nice if someone from this site broke any of the state records

Strips of carp meat work pretty well for macks if you can't get your hands on some fresh sucker. I guess the fish are good for that. They are fun to catch if nothing else is biting. It would kind of pain me to put them back in though.

This discussion on carp is very interesting. Every year I see those huge monsters cruising 11-mile and this year when I am having a slow day there I am going to try and catch one because catching anything that big sounds like fun. Do they eat crap off the bottom like suckers...do they pose any kind of problems for the reservoir or any of the other species of fish? Once they get to a certain size and don't have any predators besides meth (joke) what controls their population? Just curious if I catch one if I should take it home and feed it to my three dogs, I bet they would like the way crap I mean carp taste.

Meth the only thing you did wrong was let them go LOL. ;D By the way a good place to find these carp spring time is by Witchers Cove there is a rocky cliff on the North west side of the cove you have to walk all the way around to. On a sunny day they school up by that rocky shoreline and do whatever carp do, swim around slow and stupid waiting for someone to put an arrow in them haha. Seriously these fish can't be good for that lake can they?
