Hey Everyone, I'm proud to present my 13 inch rainbow Deceiver.  This fly was tied on a 14/0 hook that I found from a deep sea shark fishing website.  This was a very fun yet challenging project to complete.  I have tied some very large deceiver patterns on 4/0 hooks for pike, but this was insane!  I tried to capture as much shimmer as I could through the use of  rainbow colored crystal flash. I dotted the body of the fly with black and red markers.   As an added effect, I tied in a san juan worm in the epoxied head to resemble the fly this rainbow supposedly took.  :p Through the process, I went through two packs of super hair, one bucktail, half a bundle of saddle hackle and an entire bag of peacock hurl. Oh, and did I forget to mention, I used an entire spool of white 3/0 thread!

My partner for the assignment was my good friend Tina Harrington.  I definetly needed a girl to help me on this one! She happens to be a pretty good wood burner and knows how to stain wood with the best of them.  She was a great help in creating the stand on which the fly sits.  We stuck the hook point into a peace of Aspen Branch I found laying around.  All and all, I couldn't be more pleased with the way we worked together to complete this project!

As part of my art class assignment, Tina and I had to find a way to reach an audience.   I saw no better audience to reach then my fellow fisherman all the way back home in Colorado.  Please post your feedback and opinions of our project as it will greatly help in our evaluation process.  Thanks again for all your support!

Re: 13" Rainbow Deciever

The fly looks great, how'd the fly go over in the art class? I like the red, gill flash.

Thanks Jim. On my first trial, I tied in zonker but the bunny hair got caught up in the epoxy and it was a big mess. So I had to start over and use something that I could easily keep off of the 30 minute epoxy...what better then one of my favorite point flies the San Juan Worm!

Haha...Would you like the pics of me in the hospital when the half pound hook clunked me in the back of the head at 100 mph and left me brain dead? No....strictly a "piece of art." But I will ty to see if I can get a 7/0 hook from the shark fishing webpage and I'll give a deceiver on that a wurl with my 9 wt for pike

Awesome!!!! Hell I would put that bad boy on a baitcaster and troll around stagecoach with it...I think all of us would gladly display that fine piece of art on our desks. Good work.

you should give it a try sometime. I can tell you where to get that size hook from and past that, it's actually pretty fun to do.

No Problem Ken.  It really helped that I had a lot of the materials from tying smaller decievers but I definetly went through a lot of that material for this one piece.  The hook was only 7 dollars.  The stand,  painting materials for the stand along with the woodburner for the engraving came out to about 20 dollars.  The rest of the stuff is regular tying material and ranges from about 2-5 bucks.  I'd say all together it was about 35 dollars but if I were to do another one which I'm sure I will, it will probably be less because I have a lot of the one time buy stuff now.

The "fishable" size decievers are a lot easier.  If I want to make them look nice for my own aesthetic reasons then it takes a little more time, but the deceivers I throw for Pike, wiper and bass are 5 minute flies not counting the time it takes the epoxy to dry.  When I'm cranking out deciever's I really don't concern myself with every little detail if I need quantity.  I just make sure I balance the material somewhat decently so the fly run strait and not on its side in the water.  I'm far more concerned with action then appearance most times.   I will say though, it's always nice when you tie a good looking fly and it does what its supposed to in the water. Its just ashame they typically can only witshstand a maximum of 3 pike attacks before the saddle hackle, bucktail and peacock hurl are mangled and torn in every which way.   ;D

...notice the green remnants of bucktail that was torn off a deceiver above this pikes eye.

Come on you guys... Topslugger's professer, and who knows who else is going to see this. Do you want them to think this forum is full of desperate men and perverts!?

Anyways Tina, I was real impressed w/ your deciever fly. Perhaps we could talk more about it over coffee? Just kidding ;)

Seriously, Topslugger, That is a work of art! I love the log base. Lot's of detail also. When Ken asked total cost, you forgot to list the hours put into it. Really good work!

Oh, and since nobody else said it, nice Pike photo!

I just didnt want anything taking away from your fly... But you still put Tina in the picture so it had to compete with her. Then you post a nice pike, boy you like competition. :p
