I've been thinking about building a backpacking fly rod for those high elevation hike-in locations, but I haven't casted anything except a 4-piece rod in years.

Does anyone fish a 5-8 piece rod that can comment on it's action as compared to a 4-piece? Is a much action lost with the additional ferrels these days?

Thanks

I think it'll depend on the blanks you use.

The action of my two pack rods is different from that of my various two-piece rods; but, then, each of the two-piece rods is unique in its own way as well. I can't really say that the pack rods are worse for their multiple ferrules. HPH

Appreciate the info guys!

While I've read ferrel/blank technology has come a way in the last decade, I don't recall reading travel rods can fish a weight higher. It seems to make sense tho given the additional ferrels would add more stiffness to the blank.

Now it's just a matter of finding a decent travel blank.. Not a huge blank market these days, especially for travel blanks (I did find a few).

Thanks again and tight lines

Decided to go with a custom CTS Affinity X 9' 5wt 5-piece.
Finally got all the components; now time to work.
Going to try for some transparent wraps; never done them before.
Expensive experimentation
