Went to Boulder Reservoir 1st. Caught a cold and a 1 lb catfish. Fished from shore. No walleye action. No trout action and not even carp.
Then came Barbour Ponds (St. Vrain State Park). They recently stocked the ponds and Sandpiper Pond (Pond# 1) was like fishing for bluegills. The put & take trout were hungry and hitting rooster tails and small kastmasters like champs. We caught a few holdovers too from the previous season which were way more colorful and put up better fights.
Here's something interesting. My lady was using a kastmaster and hooked into something big. She's a novice fisherlady who hasn't yet tuned in on her "fightin" skills. She's used to catching small fish and reeling them up like a high speed electric winch.
Anyway, her drag was screaming. I was the one who set the drag so I know that it had to be a heavy fish. I barely even set it cause I thought we wouldn't catch anything big. When I heard that drag, I turned to her and asked, "are you stuck? Are you snagged?"
"It's moving!" she replied.
I said, "take it easy and put a little more bend in your rod."
She didn't. She kept her rod pointing straight out at only a slight angle reeling as fast as she could while the fish was heading the opposite direction. I ran to help her, but by the time I got near her it was over. The kastmaster must have torn of the fish's lip. It shot out of the water nearly giving me a new piercing. The boil at the fish made was an impressive one. I couldn't tell if it was a large trout, or a bass or a carp! For all we know, it could have been a muskrat. Anyhow, she's was a good sport about it. After that she kept fishing until she limited.
St. Vrain Ponds (Barbour Ponds): recently stocked!!...... Yesterday, according to the park office.
