Where I live in New mexico there are a few private Ranch areas that spill into public sections. My question is what do these big Rainbows feed on since not use to bugs and are pellet fed?

Any fly recomendations or theory's on targeting these beasts that escape the pen? Also if you've fished for them do they turn on at certain times of the year, times of the day etc...

Thanks

Powerbait.

If you must use a fly, try something kind of flashy that will trigger their instincts even though they don't really know what it is. A Pistol Pete comes to mind.

I have fished a river in Ohio that spills out of a hatchery and the fish just below the hatchery stack up to feed on the pellets that wash through. I tied some very short shank flies out of dubbing like a hare's ear with out the ribbing. It caught fish for a couple of miles below the hatchery. Yea- the flies look kinda like a pellet. Felt like cheating but I released all of them.

#12 Dog Chow Emerger pattern. Make sure to crimp the barb down.
