I caught an 8 pounder twice out of a private pond in my parents' neighborhood. The first time it was on a foxee jig, the second on a slug-go. Those times were in the early to mid nineties as well.

Largemouth: almost 6 lbs. (juniata, connected lakes, and jerry creek)
Smallmouth: almost 5 lbs. (yampa river.)
I broke off about a 10 lb bass last year at connected lakes on a popper, hooked him near the bank and he broke my 8 lb test before I could loosen the drag.
