I have never caught anything on one. I fish from shore. Teach me how to catch fish on a crankbait/jerkbait.

First off, what is the difference between a crankbait, swimbait, jerkbait, etc... I bought one today I think is a jerkbait. I also bought one that I think is a swimbait. What tactics do I use? What colors and sizes should I buy?

Yes. I will get more into the details later. At work but wanted to get some basic questions out there first.

I tried a couple different crank/swimbaits last night.

Can anyone suggest like one or two exact lures to look for? I am headed to Discount Tackle in a couple of minutes and will look at some.

Quite a bit more info would be needed about where you plan to fish before a specific lure can be suggested. (Depth, water color, Your rod/reel setup, water temp, ect)

Fenwick Eagle GT rod 6'6" Medium-Moderate
Shimano Symetre Reel (4500?)

Depth, water color, temp all vary. Holy **** this is complicated.

Shad and bluegill for clear water, firetiger, clown for stained. Match the diving depth to the depth your fishing, rip it through the tops of weeds, load the rod, keep reeling and be ready for a strike when it breaks free. Get some squarebill cranks. Get some craw colored cranks. Bang them off rocks.

I will try one. Any particular pattern? Do they float? Sink? Any particular size? Let's say I am going after bass tomorrow at a city pond, what are your recommendations?

You can't go wrong with xraps. Get some in different sizes and various colors. One of the best ways to learn is trial and error. You can't go wrong just starting out with a constant retrieve. Try fast, slow and everything in between. Then try a twitch every so often while you retrieve. Then try stopping the lure and letting it suspend for a couple seconds, and then reel again. Try incorporating these techniques as well. See where this is going. There are all sorts of techniques to use. Don't let it intimidate you though. Sometimes the overwhelming amount of info can prevent you from realizing what's really important- just get out there and give it a shot. People like to complicate things, often unnecessarily.

I have been doing this, still no luck on these types of lures. Going out tomorrow to try again.

Here's a couple questions for you guys:
1) Do you tie direct or use a swivel or snap lock?
2) Braided line with a mono/floro leader, or straight Mono/Floro line on the reel?
