What is the difference?? they look the same to me... i was watching OLN and these guys were catching "spotted bass" but they looked just like a largemouth... with the black lateral line and everything...

the lateral is broken on the spots. if you see the 2 together, it is really obvious

the mouth on a spotted comes even with the eye when closed a smallie is ahead of the eye and ole bucket mouth is rearward of the eye

The best way to tell them apart is...on a spotted bass they will have a small tooth patch on their tongue while the largemouth do not.

mmm...yes and no, this was actually just on a show on OLN where the guy was talking about the tongue patch too, but he did say that 10% of Largemouth have it as well so its not always the easiest way to tell. The best way to tell is by the lateral black line or spots and by the closed jaw position with it being either before or even, or for largemouth being well behind the eye.

Pound for pound I think spots fight harder than the Larrys.
Smalllmouth still get my vote for the toughest. Especially river smallmouth.
