I'm guessing it was a caddis. google pictures of the larvae and see if it matches up.

That's a caddis. It's not technically a scud, but your flies are very similar in appearance. They match the caddis closely enough that they were probably taking it for a caddis. Good job being observant and looking at the bugs.
