usually i target them early in the year when they are in shallow. i use small clousers or glass minnow type flies, 6 and 8s. white and chartruese work best for me. fish rocky areas and shorelines, if you are fishing from a boat in thick cover try to locate the depth the fish are suspended in (this is key) and use a float or foam indicator to keep your fly suspended at that level. its tricky fishing and casting like this, but it works especially well from a boat that you can get into the cover or around docks with. a slow retrieve usually works best. any fly that has lots of movement (marabou or rubber legs are good) is important. they can be tough to find around here, ive had my best luck back east doing this..but they are around so keep looking and you will find them. ive also "cheated" and used small crappie jigs with this method...it works well once you locate the fish.

try "pasla" type indicators, or the cork type you attach with a toothpick.
