All,

As much as I love winter and ice fishing. My favorite type of fishing is with the fly rod and a river. I've fished mostly all the seasons but winter. I would like to get into winter fly fishing. I understand it can be very tough the fish are not as active, and they generally go for the small stuff.

I assume midges are the key in winter. One fly i can think of right of the top of my head is a zebra midge.

I would like to know what others think is a good winter fly?

I would love to help you out and provide info on the subject... but I fear it would only end up on a video. Sorry man.

It will end up on the video weather you provide me the info or not. Not sure what problem you have with me documenting my adventures but I'm sorry you feel that way. :)

I'm sure it will, whether I provide info or not... I get it. My problem is the direction social media and youtubers are going... Let me be clear. I love to watch videos. Shoot, I even dig your videos to a point. But to be "successful" as a youtuber, it's all about content. It's only a matter of time before you, or someone like you, is pimping out smaller waters or quiet waters.

CO just doesn't have the luxury of lots of water, and with the direction the CPW is going, we get less and less access along with more and more population. Now, add in countless folks promoting said waters with videos that glorify the process by showing the best of what is, a ton of work, and you have a growing issue.

Doc, don't take it personally, I'm a CO native who's fished these waters since I was 5 yrs old (over 40 years). I see things going a direction that will ultimately mean the quality of fishing declines in CO. I've helped countless people become better fishermen and I will continue to, but helping out folks so they can pimp out our limited waters is something I can't do. What I really hope is, this little rant makes you think a little. Peace...

Well I have not done much winter fly fishing myself, but I have heard that egg patterns are good.

To the point of videos. I do agree that we have over pressured water in Colorado. Just use common sense. Maybe if you make a video fishing a certain tailwater, just keep the name of where you are fishing out of the video. There is a good chance Avid fisherman like those of this forum will know where you are, and others can just enjoy some quality content and wonder where the heck you are.

He has quickly shown that he uses poor judgement in regards to discretion. I've seen recent stuff from him and his crew that makes me want to hurl. No tips from me.

I agree 100%.
I found this on another site, I copied and pasted here, he says it alot better than I can;

I truly appreciate the information shared by members. Most post are entertaining, educational and thoughtful. However, I still struggle with the dilemma of members disclosing location and result details.

I understand why some people are comfortable with full disclosure of details... and can appreciate the positive intent of sharing "good news" via social media.

However, sharing may have unintended consequences:

Your fishing spot runs out of parking
Your best friend stops texting you fishing results
You meet new people that traveled long distances to find safe ice and a HOT bite.
You get critical notes from fellow forum members ... explaining the concept of SPOT BURN
You get flooded with thank you messages from forum members
Your spot is over-fished

Please don't send messages suggesting I am acting selFISH.... because I am selFISH when it comes to sharing information that may have unintended consequences for me, my friends and fellow forum members.

Full disclosure post may seem like a generous gesture ... however being too generous will likely result in unintended consequences.

BTW ...if you decide full disclosure is a good practice ... please send the GPS location of the most productive spots or attach pictures with the GPS location included.

Read Modern Midges by Rick Takshashi and Jerry Hubka.

Publicizing lesser waters is the equivalent of dripping toxic waste into them.

Lol. I just remembered that guy that posted a vid of himself head planting a brown on the dam rocks trying to get it closer to the camera. I can't remember his name but I think he got mad at all negative comments and quit.

That was McFly.. He thought I was such an ass... but really, he just didn't get what he was doing... not to mention he was a below average fly fisherman. Watching him slam that fish was painful... Blasting those ponds was pretty shitty too.

I'm interested to hear Dr. Cro's reaction to all of this. He seems like a fairly level headed dude. I wonder if any of it sinks in.

That was definitely McFly. That dude is still churning out like 6 videos a month! I have to admit, I hated that guy's guts. Cro at least seems like a cool guy to hang out with if he wasn't live streaming :biggrin1:

I can only hope that discussions like this sink into people's heads and they handle ALL waters and fish as though they are secret and priceless. I made the mistake of posting a vid, once, of a renowned tailwater. Never again. I think it encourages more to do such.

McFly! LOL My buddy and I were talking about him sometime back. He was new and eager but he proved to me he cared less about the fish and more about his YouTube vid. I think for many of these YouTube'rs it's more about starring in their own production.

I am a CO native as well. I have seen MANY areas go to crap and this was just as a result of books, magazines, and obviously an exploding population. Today, with information available anytime, it's just getting worse. People compare CO with MT, UT, WY, NM but fail to realize our state resident population is as big as any 3 of those aforementioned combined. Now add in the tourism! One reason why I am a proponent of current Colorado waterway laws.

I have no issues with vids, books, and magazines if they are "How to...". They are great resources for new anglers but pimping out areas is horrible. It attracts "McFlys" and many lesser water fish populations can not persist those anglers.

Sweet! A few friends and I would like to fish that river. We are looking for a place to camp as well. Do you have room at your place?

What river? Ah Hell. Just post the GPS coordinates, we can use Google maps to fill in the rest. Power bait? Worms? Eggs? Is snagging legal? What was the date? Doesn't have to be exact; week of month is fine.

BTW, we keep what we catch. No limit right? Hope there's no law around. I follow the rules but some of the guys coming along have their own opinions.

Nice vid cochise. No pimping there!
