Headed out to Gross this morning with Fishhard in search of toothy critters.  Arrived at around 6:30a.m. and started out on the north side by the big garage/shed.  Slight wind coming in from the west so the water was a little choppy.  Worked our way west pretty far, I'd say about half the north side of the lake and back.  didn't see no muskies sunning, or even a chaser.  Used a suick, j-13, daredevils, muskie killer, and husky jerks with no success.  Seen quite a few small fish between 6-8inches swimming about and even had some chase our lures.  I think I seen a school of small kokes (about forty) swim by too.  There were also tons of small minnows (raindbows) everywhere.  I did manage to see a huge rainbow cruising the shore.  It must of been at least 20 inches.  On top of that, I snagged a $13 lure and (shhh) waded out to get it forgetting my phone was in my pocket.    The water felt great.  Ended up leaving tired, skunked, and without a working cell phone but I have to say, any day fishing is better than sitting on my fat butt at home doing nothing or working.  That is a tough lake.

Bad BAD boy, wading is against the rules. You might make the denver water mafia mad.  ;) ;) ;) Sorry for the lack of tact, but I'm sorry that is what they are. I don't care what the water dons say, if I snag up a lure and can get it, in I go. Heck with em. Heck with all of em.

was it a pain to get down to the water......ive heard that gross was pretty tough to get down too........
Oh no! Not the cell phone! I did that last year in the Poudre River while wading! You still gonna go to Pinewood tomorrow? I'll be there, I will more than likely be some where between the dam and fisherman's cove.
Fishing Guitars: No it was not a pain at all. The first time I went in April it sucked but now the water level is very high right up to the trees so from the parking lot to the water is less than a five minute hike.

Scorpion_bsk: The cell phone is okay again. Just took it apart and dried it off. Of course I am going to Pinewood still. What time will you be there? I am going to try to make it around 7ish and will probably be walking the whole shoreline. I didn't get to speak to you much at Chatfield but I'm sure we will talk more tomorrow when you are witnessing my new master angler catch ;). I left the state record in Gross for now but I will be back.

you guys ever use suckers instead of tossing lures
ive used suckers before , but with no sucess i know they work well alive threw the ice but alot of places you can get in big trouble for using live suckers, i think its condsidered illegal just like minows above the 7000 feet, have any of you had any luck with tip ups at stagecoach, elvenmile etc ..
yep above 7000 east of the divide no live fish for bait! are there any good places bellow 7000 that still ice up hard ive always wanted to fish live shinners or suckers thru the ice?

Sure. Depending on how cold the Winter is, you can get "safe" ice and fish live minnows on places like Chatfield, Cherry Creek, Boyd, Douglas, and Aurora.
when you say "depending on how cold the winter is" what do we need the arctic blast from he** or just a good average winter?
well at least you made it up to gross I tried to go on sat. morning untill i received a sign from the fish gods just as i got on to hwy 72 my i dopped my drive line in my truck i had to call a buddy so he could bring a new you joint  man did that ever suck i will try again this weekend

I haven't had a problem with suckers the last couple of years. I haven't gotten the tigers that I have been targeting but I have gotten some rainbows. Hopefully I get my tiger today!!! I haven't had a problem with rattlers in years now and I hope it stays that way. The last time was around 1985, I was up there and I was moving some rocks around and I came across an adult rattler that wasn't too happy about me distubing his resting place and he let me know about it!!! I am really nervous about venomous critters since I got bit by a copperhead in Texas when I was seven years old. It gave me a good amount of respect for critters that are venomous!!!! :-[

One of my worst fears. Kind of offtopic, but here's a question: Isn't Pinewood a little high in elevation to have rattlers? Or how bout how high up do they thrive? I remember someone else telling me about seeing rattlers at Pinewood while fishing for trout.
