Got to Harvey Gap @ 12:30am.  Sky was clear and full of stars.  Caught a 10 in. crappie on the first cast.  Caught about 5 more crappies.  That was it for the night for crappie.  Decided to try for catfish.  Baited the hook with beef liver.  The bell is ringing within five minutes.  Set the hook and snagged in the rocks.  It's great fishing off the dam @ Harvey Gap but it snaggs in the rocks easily.  Didn't want cut the line so I just left it there.  About ten minutes later my reel is screaming.  About a 7 lb catfish.  The whole night was a hit and miss on chicken liver and beef liver.  Went home around 5 am.  Came back to Harvey Gap around 2:00pm, but fished by the swim beach (family picnic).  Was there for only 15 mins. and a storm rolls in.  Just got the charcoal going and had to pack up and leave.  In that 15 mins, caught 6 crappie (between 10-14 inches).  After the storm passed, went back to Harvey(8:00pm)  Fished the area next to the swim beach and caught 11 crappie in ten minutes.  Went home around 8:50pm,

Nice...cats in harvey aren't like they used to be but its got some nice ones. The crappie are doing well in there too. Wish I could say the same for the pike though. Do you ever catch many pike at harvey gap? It used to be pretty good for big ones but doesn't seem to be anymore. The last one I got there was in 03 it was a 32" 9 pounder caught on a #15 panther martin. It was the only one I caught all day.

I was fishing Harvey Gap that morning actually on the north end in about chest deep water. I caught a bunch of smaller crappie between 4-8 inches and several huge bluegill. Saw one small baby pike and thousands of baby bass in the shallows. It was a sad day was well there was a catfish on the bank up there that had to be pushing 30 pounds. Was around 30 inches long and as big around as a vollyball.

Sorry- No crappie pics. I didn't think they were picture worthy. Maybe next time. I will be heading out there again, soon. I fished there last year a couple of times between mid July and the End of August. Caught a lot of crappie and catfish, all night. Biggest cat I caught there was about 20 lb.

Where do you fish on the dam for cats at harvey? Anywhere along it? Does it matter? I might be going soon so it would be nice to know. Also, what did you use for the crappie?

Anywhere along the dam is good. If you are fishing at night for crappie, I found out that it is more effective using GREEN glow sticks tied to the tip of the Thill floater. Battery operated red/green floaters or no glow stick are not as effective. Green crappie jigs tipped w/ a worm is the most effective. Tried other colors and no hits at all. "Little mean guys" jig also works well. I got those at Walmart and Gander Mountain. Crappie was hitting on that during the day.

silt is exit 97
I am always around there fishing the river (usually around exits 121, 119, 114, 111, and 109, but the river is good at silt too and even down to rifle).
