That sux, any warranty? Otherwise, time for a teardown. I have been neglecting some of my equipment, going to upgrade bearings and drag washers on a few reels soon.

Is the drag greased? When it gets cold grease gums up and I've lost many fish on cold drag when ice fishing. The solution....carbontex drag discs ran dry, same drag in -10 as in 90 degree weather....I quit buying the expensive shimanos and went with the $30 cheapies and just upgraded my drag for ice fishing setups. The discs are not as expensive as you think, like $4 per reel.

The other thing to look at, and I have this happen on my pfleuger's, is the anti-reverse is also greased and it slips and does not engage on the ice always, so I've had birdsnests on hooksets on spinning reels for the same reason. take it apart and check the grease....
