Horseshoe Reservoir

All,

Has anybody been to Horseshoe Reservoir at Lathrop State Park lately?  I'm making the long drive there next weekend for my fall tiger musky fishing trip and am interested in hearing any recent reports, especially water temps and ramp conditions (the state parks site information is nearly a month old).

Thanks,

Chris

Where is Horseshoe located at? What towns are close?
it's near walsenburg, south of Pueblo. I haven't heard anything lately, but a friend caught a 15 lb cat there earlier in the season. usually the fishing there is pretty good, and I hear BIG muskie come out of there every year. wish I knew more about it, I love tham cats! let us know how you do.
good luck
about the ramp give em a call (719) 738-2376 (phone)

they were very nice and helpful when i called them in the spring havent been yet so let us know how you do

maybe a couple pics of there new camping area if it is open they redid a batch recently
Here's the output from my trip:

Water temps 60-65 degrees, green weedgrowth down to about 14' deep water. Trout were stocked on August 29 and Sept 15, which gave the tiger muskies plenty to eat just in time for me to show up. Therefore, I did not even see any tiger muskies (except for a dead one) in 25 hours of fishing for them. I did catch a 22" smallmouth on a muskie lure as a nice bonus, though.

Pinion campground is completely open; the biggest change is that each loop now has a separate showerhouse and all of the sites in that campground are electric sites. They also repaved all of the roads in the campground. Also, they added a few sites so all of the site numbers have changed, so if you had a favorite site, check the map before reserving it because the site number is probably a little bit higher than it used to be.

Chris
thanks for the update

You might of weighed him or her...the state record is only 21 inches supposedly...but no mention of how fat the fish was for the record holder...

they also have a yearly record for the longest fish for those that release it may have been this years winner
Any idea how the fishing has been for other species. Wipers especially?
The stocked trout have been biting well at both reservoirs (of course they have, there's loads of them). Judging from the picture book in the visitor center, the pike in Martin have been hitting well since mid-August (of course, they now have plenty of trout to eat as well). I didn't see any recent pictures or reports of wipers, so it looks like they aren't on right now.

Unfortunately, I did not get a picture of the fish, as I forgot to dredge my camera up from the bottom of the rod locker before I started fishing. The bass was bleeding a bit, so I didn't want to prolong the release any longer than I needed to, so I didn't take the time to get a picture (I was fishing alone, too, making it more difficult). Oh, well, at least I know it's still in there for somebody else.
