Didn't know where to post this.

I am in search/need of vintage motor repair. I have a 1966 Johnson 20 horse that needs some tune up work. I acquired this as a basket case, and have replaced a bunch of parts including the points & condensers. I can get it to run by tweaking the carb. After a rough warm-up, I can then get it adjusted to run smoothly throughout the throttle range. However, if I then leave it set overnight...it won't even start! I am not certain the points are correctly timed as I don't have any means of adjusting the timing other than trial and error. At this point I have reached my limit and am ready to turn it over to someone that has a clue what to do. However, I can't find anyone that will work on that old of an engine. Hopefully someone here, "...knows a guy." Any help is much appreciated.

Does the motor have a fuel shut off? Sounds like the motor floods out overnight. If the motor does have a fuel shut off, turn the fuel shut off to the off position while running and let it run out of gas when you finish with it. I've worked on a few of the old motors. Try playing with the point gap, new condenser? , spark plug gap? wire for plug new? new coil?

No problem bud. I have a "57" Johnson 10hp I used on my old boat that ran when I parked it...LOL...going to restore it after I retire. I have an original decal set for it so it should just need seals , impellor and paint! Good luck with yours!
