Thanks to this site i caught my first(and 2nd and3rd) wiper today.Im usually a trout fisherman but the reports on wipers got me very excited.I got on the water about 11am and flatlined a kastmaster 3/8 oz and a rat-l-trap.Caught two small trout right away, then trolled to the north shore and nada.Trolled back twards the marina and in 16ft of water i caught a keeper wiper.Awsome!Very cool fish.So continued to troll and proceded to catch 2 more wiper,3more trout(two were over 2 pounds)and a 12inch walleye.Off the lake by three, and home before 4:30.All the hours viewing this sight just justified itself today! lynmack

Glad to here it I always have fun at that lake even if the wind tries to kill every time. I still think wiper is one of the best fighting fish in the state. I still trying to decide to fish Jackson this weekend or Pueblo. I want to catch more wipers.

I just fished Jackson yesterday (thursday the 26th) in hopes of catching me some wiper. Started at the inlet about 7:30a.m. and nada. Lots of garbage and dead carp floating around. Moved to the dam right above the inlet and used worms and minnows. Had a few small taps on the lines but that was it. Guy next to me caught a nice 18 inch bow on orange powerbait. Decided to try some powerbait around 11:30 and bam!!! Nice fat bow that broke the hook right by the shore. Fished with my brother and father and ended up landing six bows all between 16 to 19 inches and they were fat. Lost four by the edge of the dam because they kept breaking the hooks and missed about a dozen more due to bad hook sets. One of them almost pulled my brothers pole into the water and I thought it was a wiper. They sure fought like wiper believe it or not and I ain't had fun catching rainbows like that ever. I highly recommend trying there and use pink, sherbert, or orange powerbait. The bite lasted from 11:30 to 2:30. Will post a pick when I am not being such a slug.

Hello everyone. I am new to Colorado fishing and new to this board. I usually like to fish for walleyes, but my son wants to catch a wiper this weekend! Is Jackson my best bet? How much boat traffic will it get on a holiday weekend? Anyone have any favorite locations and techniques on Jackson? I need to make sure my son catches one ;D Thanks!

It might be quite busy out there, but I'm sure there's enough room for you and your son. I dunno, I guess it depends on how many boats is 'too many' for you. Good luck to your son on catchin a wipey!!

The other day my dad and grandma were out there and caught three real nice bows. The biggest one meaured a little less than two one dollar bills. They went out two days later and caught two more bows and two 16" wipers. All of the little peninsula thing that you can drive on, since my grandma is in a wheel chair.
I think that lake has great potential.

Mrandash,

Welcome to the Forum,  I hope you enjoy what we do here.  As for Walleye at Jackson, that probably is not your best bet.  Most reports we have there are for wiper, catfish and carp.  For walleye, you might try Chatfield.  Its starting to pick up right now.  But for weekend fishing the boat traffic is very heavy.  Even this weekend when the weather is supposed to be cooler it will be heavy.

Where abouts do you live? We have people from all over the state on the forum and if we know where someone could suggest a good place to take your son with a higher probability of success.

Re: Jackson 5/30

Fished Jackson Today 5/30/2005. I though the lake would be a mad house. Got to the lake around 7:30 AM 46 degrees cold and windy. No boats in the parking lot. Only saw us and 1 other boat launch. Trolled rattle traps on some ulta light and light rods with 6 Lb test. Let the kids try out their fish fight abilites. Brought 4 to the boat and they broke off 2. Overall it was a good day if you were dressed right. Left the lake around noon. Someday I will go to that lake and the weather will be nice. Pics of the fish and lake during the launch. You can see the 1 other boat in the picture.

Went down the west bank. The side the waves were hitting the trolled the bouy line and fought the wind. used the kicker motor for power and the electric for steering and control while fighting fish, cut the kicker off. I now know why they talked me into autopilot. Good luck hope the weather is nicer. At least we didn't have to fight any boat traffic.
