My boys, Ryan, Mark and I fished Jackson from late Sunday afternoon till early afternoon on Tuesday.

The weather went from cold and rainy on Sunday afternoon to hot and calm on Tuesday.  In between the wind blew.  Was unable to control the boat in the wind and got very wet on Monday when trying to boat.  spent most of the day shore fishing in a gale.

Best fishing time was Monday am from the shore using crawlers.  Did ok this am and early afternoon from the boat.  Caught a large wiper just off the boat ramp in 10 feet using a rat-l-trap (small shad design)  Picked upa trout in the same area.  Thought we had hit the Wipers, marked fish could not get any more hits then.............where did all the fish go.  we looked shallow, we looked deep could not find them  covered a lot of water looking for them with out luck.

The trip to Jackson started out with a lot of promise, but the wind blew things away.  Lost anlmost an entire day due to the wind.

The fish are there,  it took some work to get them but thery are there.  If we had some more time I think we would have hit the fish and cleaned up.

Water temp Low-mid 60's
Clarity about 2 feet with algae

ps, note the "i am the first kid on my block to have a ColoradoFisherman.com hat"

First fish caught just after rain stopped.

I've been wating for your report since Jackson was so hot last week. It's really too bad the wind blew as it did. Maybe not the catch you hoped for but here's hoping you and the boys still had a memorable trip.

Re: Jackson (2-12 to 2-14)

We had a great time. You don't have to be catching fish to have a great time. Sure I wish the weather would have cooperated more but thats ok.

Thanks to everyone who gave advice on how to fish Jackson. It would have been much tougher to catch fish without a heads up on what works out there. Wish I would have had time to stick around a bit later and work the inlet at mid-afternoon. I think that was probably our best opportunity with the poor weather the last 2 days.

Dan

ps my sons enjoyed the trip immensly, spending some time in the tent playing Star Wars trivial pursuit with them during the wind and rain was great.

Re: Jackson (2-12 to 2-14)

Does the wind ever stop blowing at Jackson. I already damaged the boat twice trying either get on or off the lake this year, but have caught fish almost every time. even with the wind. Hope you did better then me getting off the lake with the suberb docking structure provided by the park service. At least they have a dock. I'll probably try this weekend again anyway cause I'm a glutton for punishment. If anybody fishes it thrusday or Friday be sure to post.

thanks

Re: Jackson (2-12 to 2-14)

Today was beautiful,  just a slight breeze, enough to keep a person cool.  Here are a couple of pics from the dock to show you how calm it was.  The time was about 1130 or so.

You are right about that dock,  putting in and out during the wind was rough.  The saving grace was the wind blew right out of the north rather than from the east or west.

I don't think the wiper bite is over despite my lack of great success.  I just think with the rain and the wind that I just did not have the best opportunity to target them like I wanted to.  If I could go back up soon I would.

Great report Dan,

You showed us the fish, trout, wipers... sunset, sun rise, the boat ramp, the west shore, east shore, the kitchen sink...

My only question - where's the walleye???

Re: Jackson (2-12 to 2-14)

Dan,

Glad you had fun despite the weather. After reading your report, I realized that I talked to you and your boys in the parking lot at Jackson at about 1:30 pm yesterday. Sorry that I did not make the connection at the time. I fished Jackson from 2:00 to 6:30 pm yesterday. Ended the the day with 4 legal wipers, 3 nice rainbows, and one walleye about the size of the one in Dan's picture. Threw back one small rainbow and lost another 5-6 fish (mix of rainbows and wipers). Had one wiper snap a line. The fishing was very slow compared to a week ago. The wipers did not start to hit until about 5:45 pm. The water had a lot more algae in it then it did a week ago. That may have made a difference. Once again, all of the fish were caught within 300-400 yds. of the inlet. All of the wipers, along with one of the trout, were caught on a 2" silver and blue rat-l-trap (the blue is along the back). Does anyone know if the fishing in this lake slows down over the summer?

You could.... You should.

Yeah, the weird sudden rains that came through this last week and the beginning of the weekend messed me up too. I just came back from Sterling with not too much to tell, but I'll post that later when I'm done with the school day. Glad you had a good time though. Those are some really nice pics.

NICE!!

Don,

I think you might be right, there seem to be leaves - on the trees.

After careful inspection, and many hours finding Waldo, I seeeee the walleye.

Good Job Dan!
