I floated the blue below green mountain on friday and it was...well...it is what it is.  The canyon is fishing great and the NATURAL  fish were thumphing streamers all the way to to Mr. jones's pet fish. We eddied up below some of the wing damns and proceeded to land several fish over ten pounds. I'm sorry but I don't care if a fish is 20 pounds in this section...its no trophy.  These fish are ugly slimy pellet fead fat asses.  They are seriously the slimiest fish you will ever touch.  Even then, it's still fun to catch a ton of easy big fish, but I don't feel any sense of accomplishment by doing so. Because of the way Jone's dictates that beautiful section of river with the mighty green dollar...I have no reservations in telling you all exactly how to whack the piss out of his fish.

Here's how you fish the private section in a nutshell. Use a giant Red worm with a bigger than normal prince nymph below it. A drag free drift is not needed here...infact its probably a deatriment. If you want to get the big fish 10 and up  you have to get on the bottom.  Use a ton of weight so that your flies bounce and even stop on the bottom.  Tippet size is irrelevant--3x, 2x, 1x, ox, doesnt matter. IF you dont fly fish, I imagine you could easily toss a big san juan worm behind a bell sinker and slowly real it in.

WE didn't really take a lot of pictures on this trip, but I'll try and post one or two.  Below the Jone's section I did roll a really big cutbow on a streamer as well as a few healthy browns.

All and all this is a beautiful and fun float, but I really don't feel that any fish cought in this section should count towards any records.  To me a trophy fish is one you work for.  A trophy Is a wild fish breaking ten pounds landed in public water.  A trophy is not a pellet fead fish sitting below miles of manmade structure with the IQ of a minnow.

PS: Does anyone else picture Jones to look and act like Mr Burns from the Simpsons?

nice cuttbow cought in the less private section--he ate a 5 inch streamer

Fat fish in the really private section--notice the color differances betwen the fish eating pellets and the one eating meat

ROFL! PescadoDiablo4, I like your reports and attitude man!

Thank you very much for the detailed information, as hard as it is to read while I'm LMAO, I think I got it by the third time. I agree with you about trophy status, but still, a 10lb trout, man that makes me drool anyways, LoL. It sounds like you had a great time and I hear that section is a fun float also, I'm gonna hit it up next summer in my water master, can't wait. Looking forward to a pic or two.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue

One of these days Im going to fish that area or atleast the small public spot right below his property if I can find how to get there. I fish for stockers so 10lb stockers are good enough for me. >:D

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue

Epic--the only public sections are at the dam, and at the "take out." There is actually one public access about 3 miles before the private stuff but I couldn't even begin to describe how you get there. If this helps...you park at the spot on highway 9 where it turns from summit county to whatever county. You'll see a pretty beat up road heading towards the river. You have to walk about 1/2 a mile in and treck down a pretty steep hill but once your in its pretty sweet. Signs on the opposite side of the river say private...but Im going by the map that says it aint. Just another mystery of Jurrasic park.

The acces your talking about below his water is all the way to where you take out across from the iron bridge. There is a sign there that says no treaspassing but I know for a fact that spot is public. Jone's however is trying to trade a large parcel of land with the BLM elsewhere for that spot by the takeout so floating becomes even more inconvenient. I bet it happens. Theres also a piece of public land at the confluence.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue

Thanks for the info man. What kind of boat did you float it in? I'm looking to try it in a pontoon one of these days, possibly.. So are you telling us that that entire strech of private property is owned by one guy? What a waste-

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

we use the self-bailing aire boats. Its the way to go. Catarafts bug me. I think he owns roughly 4 miles...but other ranchers own parts of this section as well. I think they are all pretty well in cahoots.

PLEASE READ THIS...this is not an easy row! The canyon is an extremely technical piece of water to navigate. Lots of rocks that will flip you and some pretty big wave trains in the narrow sections. Once you clear the canyon there are several irrigation dams and wing dams you have to drop down and work through. Unless you are extremely experienced on the oars I would strongly urge you to do this float with someone who has done it in the past. If you ship wreck...there's a good chance there won't be another boat by to help. Its a pretty remote float, and it would be a while before you could get help.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

PD4...if you ship wreck wouldnt you have to touch bottom or shore and then the trespassing police would be there to escort you anyway...I thought this place was patrolled heavily...is it like Aurora where if you do something wrong (even think about it) a red lazer sight appears on your chest?!...

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

hahaha! Yea there are snipers in the trees waiting to take you down the first tiem you bump a rock.

In all seriousness though, Its a 14 mile float...as heavily as it is patrolled thats a lot of ground to watch. The law is a boater in distress has the right of way to do what is neccesary to regain safety. There are two types of float guides in our area...those who have flipped and those who will flip. Im still waiting to make that one wrong move and Trust me...this would be the last river I would ever want to flip on.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

Yeah I've been talking to the kayakers about that section.  They pretty much said the same thing, tough row, lotsa work through the canyon, but once you are past that it's not too bad accoring to them.  How big are the drops at this flow?
The kayakers seem to think that run is a class III at lower flows, say 400, but I personally do not know. Have you floated it at lower flows?

I talked to a guy, pretty experienced, said he took a one man pontoon down that section.  My raft isn't as big as those aires, it's 8ft basically, one man.  I wouldn't attempt it at the flows lately though, 900+ I think, but it's going down starting today by 200cfs (I don't take credit for that info I got it from another person on boating site).  Still, I heard you need to be experienced, and I'm not so I wouldn't hit it anytime soon, I was hoping in another year.

That water sure is cooooold!!!

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

I know what you mean about slimy ugly smelly fat asses, I used to guide for summit guides here in keystone and we used to end trips on this lake in keystone where the fish are all pellet fed, 5-6 lb brookies are common her but you can never get that damn smell out of your net.
good to see someone else has a stinky net too.

Wow! That second trout is a PIG!

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

At this flow its actually an easier row but you gotta hit every thing strait on. Some of the big wave trains would easily cork-screw a raft if hit sideways. A few pretty decent suckholes will also form at that flow. some of the drops are around 4 feet. Once again at this flow so long as you hit them strait on and push your ok. Alot of the wingdams are submerged right now so you can go right over them. I have floated it at 350ish and its an entirely differant ball game I probably wouldn't do again. Your making moves four 14 miles and it makes for a really long day. The drops have rocks exposed everywhere and most the time you have to intentionally bounce of a rock to hit your line through the drop

A one man pontoon....I don't know how you would ever be able to fish. You can't exactly stop and get out to wade lol. Not to mention its kinda nice to have some extra hands help belay the boat down the cliff at the put in and yank it out at the take out.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

Sounds like a cool trip...Nothing I've done or could do without an experianced guide or someone that could master a raft...But, sure sounds exciting..Fishing seems to be a heck of a bonus...Nice report and great pics...Thanks.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

wish we could guide this section but no one is allowed to guide below green mountain even though there is a BLM section at the put in and the take out...I wonder who has a hand in that?

Congrats on catching those Trout  ..Not a challenge really and could care less about those farm fishees..

I have a buddy who works at the Ranch, he said the access down the way from his property at the BLM is now Jones and the Upper section is swapping as well...not much left to fish now thanks to the idiot owner of BVR!

Congrats on catching Farm Fed Pellet Trout  Reall challenge and you should be very proud. I think I use to go to pellet farms when I was 12 to catch fish like that....not a challenge and could care less about those farm fish..
wow, can you read or just write, he stated pretty clearly about how he feels about catching the lazy pellet fed fish.still nice picture of a pretty damn big fish. pesco you get points in my book for being up front and honest about your feelings about catching those fish. you are the man, i think that TD might be a bit jeolous, i don't see any that big in his pics. ::) i'd like to have my pic with a fish that size regardless of where i caught it, that is bigger than any trout that i have ever caught.maybe you should edit your post so you don't look like such a hater.

Re: Jurassic Park of the Blue pics added

I did read what he said and to each his own, he seems to be a good fisherman ans did mention that it was somewhat of a joke, not knockin that, I just "stated" that I prefer not to fish pellet fish. I have fished on the property, as well as Three Forks Ranch, Boxwood, and many other ranches across the country (for free I would never pay for that) etc

Not getting pissy just stating that Jones Property is a joke and so are the fish there
