Mr. Ed,
Do you know if they update those fishing reports like the Colorado Division of Wildlife does? Or have you found them to be accurate lol

The walleye fishing was good last 2 weeks on the dam. Boaters and shore fisherman at night have been getting into it with each other. Throwing rocks and cutting each others line, and a couple fist fights. Other than that this lake is off the chain. Good fishing .

I have found them to be as accurate as you can expect from a DOW :). They are updated weekly (I think on Weds. but not sure). They do tend to change weekly anyway. A couple of weeks ago, there was no report so I emailed them directly and got a response.

I had some pictures come my way about 1 week ago of a monster string of catfish from there. I don't think any of the fish were below 5 lb.

Here are some info at Lake Mac. that I found in the Nebraska fishing forum. Also for some of the member of this forum that was giving out advices should someone start crowding them at a hot spot, unless you are 6 feet tall and think you are a UFC fighter, read these.

I just got off the phone with a good friend of mine that lives out in ogalalla. He told me the eyes were up in the rocks and runnin good. Unfortunately he said it is more combat style fishing as he witnessed two fist fights at the boat ramp and saw rocks thrown at a couple of other boats by individuals on the dam face. This all took place last night. I read a thread earlier today where this subject was discussed and this year being the first year I had ever even considered trying out the spawn bite for eyes. He changed my mind in a hurry and I told him I just wait a couple of more weeks for the post spawn. I just fail to see the reasons for that kind of stuff to go on and it really amazes me that as sportspeople it gets escalated to that point among us. I am sure there are plenty of walleye in that lake to go around and just fail to see the need for such tactics. There are alot more important things in life to worry about than if the guy in that boat cut you off in that pass or if the boat passes what you thought was too close to your line. I fished exclusively from the bank for a long time until my wife and I could afford a boat (we still cant afford it hehe), and I do my darndest to make sure I do not encroach on any bank anglers area just seems like common decency to me. all right enough.. sorry I just had to vent. Oh yeah I am new to this board and I want to thank some of you for I have found some great hints,tips,tech info and some jokes here. Have a great easter weekend all

It really is not that bad Orion despite what people say. If you go down there KNOWING it is going to be crowded, get there early, be POLITE, and RESPECT everyone around you, you will not have any problems. Two years ago I fished off the dam face almost every night during the spawn, and never had a problem. I met a lot of great people, learned about how to fish there, and I even got offered a ride in a boat to troll along the dam by a complete stranger, and wound up with a limit of walleye that night. He only caught two, so I gave him my fourth so we each had three fish.

Your always going to have bad apples, but if you avoid being drawn into confontration, be polite, and get there early enough to stake out a spot, your fine. It is not worth missing out on some fun fishing just because of a few problems.

That kind of thing happens everywhere....even at Elwood. That's what happens when you get a bunch of idiots in a small area (not saying EVERYone out there is an idiot!) that think they own everything everywhere. There's always a couple of those guys.

Been up there five times and haven't had a problem this year. I talk to all the bank fisherman ask them how they're doing and if they have a fish on give em an atta boy!! When ya get a snag a guy just needs to yell it out and let the boat behind know what's up or Phish On!!!! Wasn't up there last night but my buddy was so I'll have to call and see if he had to throw down.

I know that there are the bad apples out there and that applies to hunting as well ie poachers spotlighters roadhunters and the like. What baffles me is why these people choose to do that kind of thing. I, like you phish like to talk to those I meet and have a great time. On more than one occasion at various lakes while in my boat have taken a complete stranger on board or have helped them unsnag their line. Albeit this is not during the walleye spawn because as I mentioned earlier I have yet to try it out, but nonetheless. We are sportsmen that should be working together not causing friction or confrontation. I have seen enough of that during my time in the military to have to even entertain some hot head at a boat ramp or the like. Just seems to take away from it all. God forbid those few people do that in front of their kids. oh well just like everywhere else we have to deal with em cause its illegal to shoot em. I think I will try to get out there during this coming week and try it out (from the bank). Good luck to all

"deal with em because it's illegal to shoot em"....funny stuff...and I know I've said that a time or two to myself, especially at the boat ramp!

why can't we all get along

I just got home tonight from mac and the worst thing i saw, well actually heard was one guy yelling that someone caught his line. put the boat in thur. night and fished until two o'clock and left empty hand. last night i was on the bank and glad of it because there was a mess of boats. had a bunch of walleyes but unfortunately most of them got off right at the bank, including a would be personal best by at least a few inches. guess it just wasn't my weekend, at least the weather was great

Had a buddy up there last night in a boat. Him and another guy boated 13. 7 which were keepers the biggest at about 26 in. Said they were catching them on tiger fire rapalas. Also said that they started at about 9 and was done by 12. When they first got there it was packed cleared out pretty good by 1030.....right when they started catching fish.

He did say that he a boat and bank fisherman had issues. This is what he told me happened. The guy on shore casted across the boats lines. The boat let the guy real the lines in where the guy on shore proceeded to cut all lines and put the lures in his box. The boat then backed up to the dam and a guy jumped out and TOOK the lures back and left the other guy sitting in the lake. Guy gets back in the boat. Boat leaves.
Crazy things happen out there but for the most part he said everyone got along pretty well. I think I will go out next week.

ive only been out to mac a couple of times and what upsets me out there is on the bank youll have two types of guys..guys throwing raps and guys trying to jig for em...every time ive been out there ill be throwin raps along the dam face and someone will watch how im fishing for a couple of minutes and then come down and stand literally ten or fifteen feet from me, thinking im not gonna throw there anymore...right. im sure that happens at other places too, but i do see it a lot when im at mac..like some of the people have no clue about how youre trying to fish.. its not my fault they're a couple hours late

This might be the wrong site to complain but when you got guys in boats having drinking contests, spotlighting for cranks that were snagged scaring all the fish away all night you are going to have some problems. Another night watched 20 empty cans bottles float to shore after someone emtied their boat. Its a shame people like that cant have more respect for the sport.

I guess I'm lucky that I don't have to work all the weekdays and can go out there when it's not such a zoo. An added bonus is that I got a couple of nice "raps" that were lying on the sand after the weekend.

I went out Friday Night at about 9:00. There were a tone of boats and a ton of people on the bank as well. There was a few boats that came by where I was at and I thought they were throwing stuff out of the boat but it was someone throwing rocks at them. There were three individuals on the cliff above me throwing rocks. I messed my reel up and was trying to fix it when a rock went over my head and landed about 2 feet in front of me. I decided to sit under the big rock so I wouldn't get hit while I fixed my reel. Then someone else came up beside me and started throwing along the bank right at me. His lure kept landing a couple feet in front of me and I had enough and just decided to leave. I think I will wait until the fish are done and try fishing along the bank on the north side.

I'll fish Mac when they are done spawning!!! Fishing is too relaxing for me to deal with that, I'll go out in the boat and fish the flats and be done with it! People are funny this time of year!

Halen I think I know the situation you are talking about. He just didn't leave him sitting in the lake though. He almost drowned the guy after he whomped on him. The other guys in the boat had to stop him from drowning the poor guy. Lots of sporting fisherman up there huh. Would hate to walk all the way back up the rocks after being beaten and nearly drowned.

The boat let the guy real the lines in where the guy on shore proceeded to cut all lines and put the lures in his box.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If it was 'accidental' then no lines needed cut , yet when anyone crosses me in plain sight I to will hack a line quicker than anyone instead of wasting my time on trying to untangle a mess and at times I've told a boater just hack them and keep what's on my end , yet I welcome them to come drown me ...
Sad to see this being posted and everyone here who seen this going on done not a thing ? ...
As far as people "throwing rocks" I'm a going to guess and it doesn't take a scientist to even assume that the ones throwing rocks are the ones who had their buddy almost drowned ...
Again my friends all this is , is BS at its finest , the major objective of going fishing is to catch "fish" and every once in awhile you will get a bad seed but the best way to rid yourselves of such a bad seed is to "get together" as fellow anglers and stand strong and say hey (edit) enough , get the hell out of here ...
I must be getting old , hell I'm only 33 and I've fished all my life , however what the hell is wrong with people anymore ...
Just a week ago I was at Zorinsky tossing some shallow running crank baits and some moron pulled up and started to "cast with me" ... Believe it or not I walked away and shook my head [I just don't need this (edit) anymore] , again I'm the first to pounce when I see stupidity BUT anymore one sees so much that hell I just shake my head and honestly walk away ...
ANYONE who is being beat / held underwater deserves a few fellow anglers to say HEY ENOUGH IS ENOUGH ... Where were a few of you guys ? ... A couple said they seen this but done nothing ? ...
I chased a couple people at the river "directly to a 'boater'" because they thought it was cool to stand / sneak on the shore and try to hit this groups boat , the guys in the boat were happy and no one got hurt other than the guys pride who was throwing the rocks ... End this (edit) fellows , truly end it and remember that 99% of the people who go fishing are all shooting for the same objective ... I don't care who is 'wrong' , yet to set back on idle and watch a guy get beat and almost drown is pathetic and I don't care what the hell the guy done ...
Boaters - nonboaters , come to a understanding and have a good time and stop trying to locate trouble ...
Hmmmm. That's disappointing. I've never had any of these problems but then again, I try to stay away from crowds.
I did have a "Nebraska Boy" come buy in his truck one night (he was way too drunk to be driving) and tell me how Colorado hates Nebraska folks because he got a DUI in Julesburg and give me a little bit of a hard time (which I talked my way out of) but fist fights and rock throwing are not tolerable.
Sometimes I'm glad I live in my own little world :)
fist fights for walleyes, throwing rocks at boats, NE hillbillies too drunk to drive, cutting lines. THAT, my friends, is why Lake Mac sucks and is also why I reccommend Lake Minatare. The numbers of huge walleyes are not as big but the A hole factor is a lot lower. The fishing at Lake Min should be picking up just about now and thru the next month. Don't fish there late summer, the irrigation drawdown makes the fish tight lipped.
Thanks for all the great information. I will have begin making plans to drive up.
The fighting thing has got to go! We as fisherman must behave as adults. Fishing for me is a real challange and great distraction from daily pressure. If you make a mistake apologise and move on. Everybody needs to take a step back and act like adults.
Pete: Lake Minatare is north and west of Lake Mac. To get there, go north to Cheyenne, East on I-80 to Kimball, then North to Scottsbluff. The lake is about 15 miles from scottsbluff. PM me for better directions. Lake Minatare is somewhat bigger than cherry creek and much nicer.
OMG, sounds like pre school kids fighting for the same swing. Surely a lake as big a McConaughy has plenty of fish to go around and I guarantee you the Walleye are not all stacked up on the dam where this combat boating takes place. A buddy of mine was out there mid April and wanted to fish the dam at night, but said there were so many boats out there once the sun went down that it was not worth the craziness. I guess most the boaters even get angry if you're not trolling in the proper direction, kind of like a rotation. Well most of those boaters are off the water by 2:00, 3:00 in the morning (either after catching their limit, or tired of catching nothing) so he decided to wait until then to get on the water so he could cast. It paid off big time and he had the best walleye fishing he could remember. No fishing is good enough to fight over. The ones causing all the trouble must not catch anything all year except for the few weeks when it is like "fish in a barrell" What a joke!! 15% of the fisherman catch 85% of the fish so think outside the box, do something different than everyone else.
Minatare is a great lake. The camping is very nice as well. The biggest eye I have caught there is only 19", but it is pretty easy to get your limit in the 16-17" range (perfect for the campfire!). I have found camping to be fairly quiet and the fish cleaning stations uncrowded. There is also a bait shop right outside the park. You can call and they will tell you what they know about the fishing--they are friendly. (308) 783-2911
I might try to go up there on Sat, but I have not heard that the bite is actually on yet, so I might just stay closer to home.
