Edit: 1/10/06 For historical acurracy I have added some recent additions to the end of my list. I will periodically add worthy excuses. List of fishing excuses: End edit

I thought it would be nice to have a thread that we can use to look up excuses for having a bad day of fishing. I noticed I have used quite a few of these the last few weeks. Please add any good ones you might have, one can never have enough good excuses.

East wind
Forgot the bait
Barometer rising
Barometer falling.
Too calm
DOW
The bite was over just before we started
The lake needs a good storm to stir them up.
The fish were deep
The fish were shallow
The fish are not here (or they'd be hitting)
Too Foggy
Too Sunny
Too windy to control boat
Wrong moon phase
Fish facing wrong way
Trolling wrong direction
Too many bait fish (shrimp etc)
Not enough bait fish
Didn't have right lure action
Didn't have right lure color
Single hook
Dull hook
Treble hooks
Didn't have enough time
Water too rough
South wind
Gear not working properly
Partner not fishing seriously
Trolling motor troubles
Cloudy
Others fishing our spot
Lost fishing coordinates
Should have fished elsewhere
North wind
West wind
Upper level low
Not watching downrigger
Fish hit during nature call
Short net handle
Inept netter
Inept captain
Inept fisherman
Shakedown trip (was just checking equipment out)
Followed another fisherman's advice
Followed a fishing report
Gloated about successful prior trip
Jinxed
Bragged about last trip
Talked about the big one we are going to catch on the way to the lake
Fish "Hitting Short"
Fish "Slapping lure with their tails"
Recent thunderstorm
New equipment
Who brought the Bananas?
Unlucky hat
Tackle in other tackle box.
Weights Wrong Color
Too prepared ? for instance bringing cooler ice

Additions 1/10/06;
I'm cursed (this one can effect an entire fishing season or more)
Zman was there (ZWT personal experience - I put it right up there with bananas)
Previously I didn't recognize new equipment as the curse that it truely is, so I added new equipment curse (or NEC)

I don't know why, but bananas bring bad luck. I'm sure someone will has a scientific explaination for it. I have been brainwash since childhood to not tempt fait, so I don't challenge long held truths.

Work2fish is the only one I know of who can use the tornado excuse with a straight face.

I have been telling my wife that the "water level is up too high this year" which drowned a lot of the keepers.

It was all good until I overheard her trying to explain this to some of my buddies the other day.... It ruined the whole thing.

TFB,

After just reading your fishing report I think we can add something like, hit the wrong rod, or line was too light...

I'm sure there is some good material in some of Dan's old reports as well. :D

Good point.
How about the angler (in that case me) was a ***** in setting the hook too early :D

Terre,

Yes, and I'd better use that excuse while I can since I truly did stop fishing for the day afterwards ;)

I like left_turn's one about the leaves on the trees, too. LOL.

Well, you forgot to mention

My partner (wife) was talking too much.
i forgot my license
My trolling motor fried the circuit board.
My boat was in the shop for a month.
My minnows died on the way to the lake.
I left my leeches in the sun.
I left my crawlers in the sun.
I froze my minnows
I froze my crawlers
I slammed my rod tip in the door
I thought you put new line on the reel for me!
I can't tie good knots because of my "fumble fingers"

I have used all of these excuses except for forgetting my license.

Dan

But Terre is the king of excuses!

A raccon ate my fish. All of them on my stringer at night. Damn

Really happened to me at John Martin.

That's what once happened to me at Bonny, but it ate my minnows instead. Climbed into the truck bed and opened up the cooler itself. We caught it red handed, then it ran off like any good thief would. Checked the cooler with lid still open and there were like only a few left and we started with like 3 dozen. This was overnight too...

Those are good Dan,

I think you have me wrong though, I'm not claiming all those excuses for myself, I'm simply trying to compile a comprehensive list everybody can use. Kind of like the Webster's list of excuses.

Shhh.. I can only barely doggy-paddle across the width of a small backyard swimming pool. Yeah it's pathetic, but that's really true.. If anything bigger or deeper, I'm a done dawg.
