Two weeks ago my father and I were fishing the Yellowstone River near Livingston, and down towards the park. Were amazed to find that large portions of the river have been closed to fishing due to the distressed state of the trout in these areas. According to Montana Fish and Game, higher than average water temperatures are the reason behind this. Our efforts were fruitless (Skunked) along many places in the river that had produced good numbers of fish in the past. Other anglers that we talked to were discovering the same result.

Cuttthroat and other trout productivity was high in the tributaries so that was a redeeming realization. Grizzly activity is high in the area so watch your six and have bear spray or a powerful firearm handy just in case. Stay safe out there!
