I think it is great you are introducing a friend to the sport and willing to work with them. Done right he will be a great fishing companion. I have taught a few folks over the years and some still flyfish. When I was 11, I learned to cast a flyrod in the street from my neighbor, Carl Hansen. Sorry, I had to name drop because he was a legend and I never knew it until I was in my 20's. I was 14 before I actually got to use a flyrod in the saltwater. I did not own a flyrod but he would spend time with me and let me use his rods to practice. I spent the next 19 years in Florida chasing saltwater fish and still love and cherish it.
As others have indicated on here, work on the casting and rod control first in an environment with little obstruction and challenges and the fancy stuff will be learned as he goes.
