Hey

I am brand new to Colorado and fishing is my hobby. I looked up a few places and am thinking about heading to Gross Reservoir this weekend. I was wondering if anyone had any tips about the area or what to use in general. I'm pretty much going for trout. I read online that Snagging Kokanee is popular there, but I have no idea what that means. (any insight would be helpful) I can fly fish or just use bait and plunk or lures. I have read that white 2.5 inch tubes with a quarter ounce weight work well. If there are any disagreements, please speak up.

Thanks for any help you may have!

Welcome to Colorado & welcome to coloradofisherman.

Snagging Kokes is where you throw a big weighted treble hook into a school of Salmon. You jerk back, hoping to impale one of the fish

If you want any tips on Gross, e-mail me at [email protected]

It's not really a lake for big fish, but is very scenic, & action on smaller trout & mackinaw can be good

I would advise any angler new to the state to watch every episode of "Fishful Thinker" & "Lip em & Rip em" you can. You can buy the 1st 5 seasons of FT & the 1st 2 of L & R. I'd add links, but am on my phone...

Also, use the search on this site to find previous reports on waters you're interested in.

Again, welcome

Gross can be a very tough lake to fish, I've been going there for a long time but not this year yet. Its a very deep lake with steep dropoffs almost everywhere. Lots of rocks, if you are fishing deep or on the bottom you will lose a ton of lures for sure. I like to use spoons there and try different depths while moving around to differt spots a lot. Some of the coves can be good for trout if the main lake isn't fishing well.
Good luck, its a nice lake but most of the fish are on the small side.
